Removal & Installation



3.3L Engines
Front (Left)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work. This allows time for the SRS or air bag system to deplete its back up energy supply.
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold to the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube. Discard the gasket.
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield.

    6 front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts in 2 steps in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Do not remove the 3 lower front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts.
     
    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold-to-mounting bracket bolt
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector
     
    3 front (left-hand) exhaust manifold-to-inlet pipe nuts
     
    Exhaust system flex tube bracket bolt
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield bolts and screws
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield
     
    3 lower exhaust manifold nuts
     
    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold and discard the exhaust manifold gasket
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure that both the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head mating surfaces are clean of any old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New front exhaust manifold gasket in place
     
    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold
     
    3 lower exhaust manifold mounting nuts. Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield with their mounting bolts and screws
     
    Exhaust system flex tube bracket bolt
     
    3 exhaust manifold-to-exhaust inlet pipe nuts
     
    HO2S electrical connector
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.

    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold-to-mounting bracket bolt
     
    3 upper exhaust manifold mounting bolts and tighten all 6 exhaust manifold mounting bolts in sequence to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm)
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold to the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Start the engine, check for leaks and road test for proper operation.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    6 front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts in 2 steps in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Do not remove the 3 lower front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts.

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S) electrical connector
     
    3 front (left-hand) exhaust manifold-to-inlet pipe nuts
     
    Exhaust system flex tube bracket bolt
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield bolts and screws
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield
     
    3 lower exhaust manifold nuts
     
    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold and discard the exhaust manifold gasket
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure that both the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head mating surfaces are clean of any old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New front exhaust manifold gasket in place
     
    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold
     
    3 lower exhaust manifold mounting nuts. Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
     
    Left-hand inner engine and transmission splash shield with their mounting bolts and screws
     
    Exhaust system flex tube bracket bolt
     
    3 exhaust manifold-to-exhaust inlet pipe nuts
     
    HO 2 S electrical connector
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.

    Front (left-hand) exhaust manifold-to-mounting bracket bolt
     
    3 upper exhaust manifold mounting bolts and tighten all 6 exhaust manifold mounting bolts in sequence to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm)
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold to the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Start the engine, check for leaks and road test for proper operation.
  8.  

Rear (Right)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Radiator overflow hose from the radiator
     
    Radiator coolant-recovery reservoir off of the bracket
     
    Reservoir
     
    Air cleaner intake tube and the engine air intake resonator
     
    6 rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube heat-shield bolts and the heat shields
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold tube to the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold. Discard the gasket.
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     

  4.  
  5. Disengage the following electrical connectors:

    Idle switch
     
    Throttle Position (TP) sensor
     
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) control solenoid
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    EGR valve-to-back-pressure transducer valve tube nut and position it out of the way
     
    2 EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube nuts and tube
     
    6 rear exhaust manifold nuts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  10.  
  11. Safely lower the vehicle, remove the exhaust manifold and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that both the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head mating surfaces are clean of any old gasket material.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold gasket onto the exhaust manifold mounting studs
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle safely.

    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold onto the studs
     
    6 rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten the nuts in sequence to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
     
    EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube and tube nuts
     
    EGR valve-to-back-pressure transducer valve tube nut
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle carefully.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the following electrical connectors:

    EGR solenoid
     
    TP sensor
     
    Idle switch
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     
    New gasket between the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold and the rear exhaust manifold crossover tube
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube to the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold. Tighten the rear exhaust manifold crossover tube-to-front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts and bolt.
     
    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube heat shield with the 6 mounting bolts
     
    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube bolts
     
    Air cleaner intake tube and the engine air intake resonator
     
    Radiator coolant recovery reservoir
     
    Radiator overflow hose to the radiator
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Radiator overflow hose from the radiator
     
    Radiator coolant-recovery reservoir off of the bracket
     
    Reservoir
     
    Air cleaner intake tube and the engine air intake resonator
     
    6 rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube heat-shield bolts and the heat shields
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold tube to the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold. Discard the gasket.
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     

  4.  
  5. Disengage the following electrical connectors:

    Idle switch
     
    Throttle Position (TP) sensor
     
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) control solenoid
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    EGR valve-to-back-pressure transducer valve tube nut and position it out of the way
     
    2 EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube nuts and tube
     
    6 rear exhaust manifold nuts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  10.  
  11. Safely lower the vehicle, remove the exhaust manifold and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that both the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head mating surfaces are clean of any old gasket material.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold gasket onto the exhaust manifold mounting studs
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle safely.

    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold onto the studs
     
    6 rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten the nuts in sequence to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
     
    EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube and tube nuts
     
    EGR valve-to-back-pressure transducer valve tube nut
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle carefully.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the following electrical connectors:

    EGR solenoid
     
    TP sensor
     
    Idle switch
     
    Transmission fluid level indicator tube heat shield
     
    New gasket between the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold and the rear exhaust manifold crossover tube
     
    2 nuts and the 1 bolt securing the rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube to the front (left-hand) exhaust manifold. Tighten the rear exhaust manifold crossover tube-to-front (left-hand) exhaust manifold nuts and bolt.
     
    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube heat shield with the 6 mounting bolts
     
    Rear (right-hand) exhaust manifold crossover tube bolts
     
    Air cleaner intake tube and the engine air intake resonator
     
    Radiator coolant recovery reservoir
     
    Radiator overflow hose to the radiator
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  


NOTE
When removing the front and rear engine mounting through bolts and nuts, lift the engine up slightly for safety.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel splash shields.
  6.  
  7. If removing the left hand exhaust manifold, remove the radiator and cooling fan assembly.
  8.  
  9. If removing the right hand exhaust manifold, remove the front suspension member as follows:
    1. Remove the left hand transaxle mount insulator nuts, if equipped with a 5 speed transmission.
    2.  
    3. Attach an engine lifting bracket to the transaxle at the location illustrated.
    4.  
    5. Install an engine support tool. Make sure the tool is securely resting on the hood ledge.
    6.  
    7. Remove the three transaxle mount insulator nuts.
    8.  
    9. Remove the lower ball joint bolt and separate the transverse link from the steering knuckle.
    10.  
    11. Remove the front exhaust tube.
    12.  
    13. Remove the power steering line bracket.
    14.  
    15. Remove the mounting bolts from the lower side of the steering gear.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the front engine mount electrical connector.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the connecting rod from the front strut.
    20.  
    21. Place a transmission jack under the front suspension member and remove the mounting nuts from the front suspension member.
    22.  
    23. Remove the front suspension member bolts from the pin stay on the vehicle body side.
    24.  
    25. Remove the through bolts from the front and rear engine mounts.
    26.  
    27. Lower the transmission jack to remove the front member. It may be necessary to remove the exhaust hanger bracket, the front and rear engine mounts and the transverse link to enable removal.
    28.

  11. Remove the right and left hand three way catalyst support bolts in the sequence illustrated.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Heated Oxygen (HO2S) sensors, Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) sensors.
  14.  
  15. Remove exhaust manifold and three way catalyst heat shields.
  16.  
  17. Remove the three way catalyst by loosening the bolts first and then removing the nuts and through bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the exhaust manifolds by loosening the nuts in the sequence illustrated.

  1. Install the manifolds and tighten the nuts in sequence to 23 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the three way catalyst by tightening the nuts first and then the bolts and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) in the sequence illustrated.
  4.  
  5. Install the exhaust manifold and three way catalyst heat shields.
  6.  
  7. Install the Heated Oxygen (HO2S) sensors and Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) sensors. Tighten to the specifications shown in the exploded view of the exhaust manifold assembly illustration.
  8.  
  9. Install the front support member in the reverse order of removal and tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the front suspension member mounting exploded view illustration.
  10.  
  11. Install any remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  12.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    NOTE
    When removing the front and rear engine mounting through bolts and nuts, lift the engine up slightly for safety.

  7. Remove the wheel splash shields.
  8.  
  9. If removing the left hand exhaust manifold, remove the radiator and cooling fan assembly.

    1. Remove the left hand transaxle mount insulator nuts, if equipped with a 5 speed transmission.

    5. Install an engine support tool. Make sure the tool is securely resting on the hood ledge.
    6.  
    7. Remove the three transaxle mount insulator nuts.
    8.  
    9. Remove the lower ball joint bolt and separate the transverse link from the steering knuckle.
    10.  
    11. Remove the front exhaust tube.
    12.  
    13. Remove the power steering line bracket.
    14.  
    15. Remove the mounting bolts from the lower side of the steering gear.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the front engine mount electrical connector.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the connecting rod from the front strut.
    20.  
    21. Place a transmission jack under the front suspension member and remove the mounting nuts from the front suspension member.
    22.  
    23. Remove the front suspension member bolts from the pin stay on the vehicle body side.
    24.  
    25. Remove the through bolts from the front and rear engine mounts.
    26.  
    27. Lower the transmission jack to remove the front member. It may be necessary to remove the exhaust hanger bracket, the front and rear engine mounts and the transverse link to enable removal.

  1. Install the manifolds and tighten the nuts in sequence to 23 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

  9. Install the front support member in the reverse order of removal and tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the front suspension member mounting exploded view illustration.
  10.  
  11. Install any remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
