Bushing Replacement



The bushings are press-fit types. Support the arm in a press, using the proper adapters. Ford tool numbers are: T93P-5493-A, T75L-1165-B and -DA.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 rear arm bolts and the mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm nut.
  12.  
  13. Pull the rear of the arm down and gently pry the arm forward and off the gusset.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Stabilizer bar-to-lower arm: 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm)
     
    Lower arm rear bolts: 87-108 ft. lbs. (118-147 Nm)
     
    Lower arm nuts: 94-115 ft. lbs. (128-156 Nm)
     
    Ball stud nut: 56-80 ft. lbs. (76-109 Nm)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt.
  8.  
  9. Separate the transverse link from the steering knuckle assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two transverse link pivot bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transverse link from the front suspension member.
  14.  
  15. Check the transverse link for damage, cracks or any deformities and replace as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Check the bushing for damage, cracks or any deformities. Replace the transverse link if necessary.
  18.  
  19. Check the ball joint for excessive play. Replace the transverse link assembly if the lower ball joint stud is worn, the ball joint is hard to swing, the ball joint play in axial directions or end play is excessive.
  20.  


NOTE
Before checking the axial forces and end play, turn the lower ball joint at least 10 revolutions so that the ball joint is properly broken in.

  1. The swinging force (measuring from the cotter pin hole of the ball stud) is 1.8-12.3 ft. lbs. (7.8-54.9 N). Refer to the illustration for the location of the swinging force measurement point identified by the letterA

  3. The turning force is 4.3-30.4 inch lbs. (0.49-3.43 Nm). Refer to the illustration for the location of the turning force measurement point identified by the letterB
  4.  
  5. Check the transverse link vertical end play, it should be zero. Refer to the illustration for the location of the vertical end play measurement point identified by the letterC
  6.  

To install:

  1. Hand tighten the transverse link mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Once all components are installed final tighten the transverse link bolts with the vehicle at curb weight and the tires on the ground. Tighten the ball joint pinch bolt to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm), the two outer link bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (139 Nm) and the single inner bolt to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). Refer the exploded view of the front suspension assembly illustration for bolt locations.

  5. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.

  3. Once all components are installed final tighten the transverse link bolts with the vehicle at curb weight and the tires on the ground. Tighten the ball joint pinch bolt to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm), the two outer link bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (139 Nm) and the single inner bolt to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). Refer the exploded view of the front suspension assembly illustration for bolt locations.
