Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the front strut upper mounting bracket and the chassis strut tower.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheel.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the 2 front brake anti-lock sensor cable bracket bolts and position the anti-lock sensor cable out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Detach the brake tube from the strut.
  14.  
  15. Support the control arm.
  16.  
  17. Matchmark the knuckle to the strut so it can installed in the same position. This is important for the camber angle of the front wheel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the strut-to-steering knuckle bolts.
  20.  
  21. Support the strut and remove the 3 upper strut-to-chassis nuts. Remove the strut from the vehicle.

WARNING
Never loosen the strut center nut until the spring is compressed or serious injury or vehicle damage may occur.

  1. Place the strut and coil spring assembly in a suitable vise and remove the strut nut cover.
  2.  
  3. Slightly loosen, butdo not
  4.

If desired, use the following steps to remove the coil spring from the strut.

  1. Using an approved coil spring compressor, compress the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly top nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the following components from the strut assembly:

    Upper mounting bracket
     
    Strut bearing
     
    The bearing seat.
     
    Upper coil spring seat and dust boot
     
    Coil spring
     

  6.  
  7. Slowly release the tension of the coil spring compressor and remove the coil spring from the compressor tool.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil spring insulator and slide the jounce bumper off of the strut assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Slide the jounce bumper onto the strut assembly and install the coil spring insulator.
  2.  
  3. Carefully compress the coil spring with an approved coil spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the following components to the strut assembly:

    Coil spring
     

  6.  


NOTE
Install the coil spring to the strut assembly with the end of the spring in the lower coil spring seat indentation.



Upper coil spring seat and dust boot
 
Bearing seat and the bearing
 
Upper mounting bracket
 

  1. Install and tighten the strut assembly nut and tighten the nut to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the strut assembly onto the vehicle and tighten the following:

    Strut-to-body nuts: 29-40 ft. lbs. (39-54 Nm)
     
    Strut-to-knuckle bolts: 101-116 ft. lbs. (137-157 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Reattach the brake tube to the strut assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install and tighten the 2 front brake anti-lock sensor cable bracket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and the adjustable strut electrical connectors, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
  14.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cowl top extension as follows:
    1. Remove the wiper arms.
    2.  
    3. Release the clips under cowl top cover and clips on hood-ledge.
    4.  
    5. Remove the seal by releasing the ends from tabs the on the cowl top cover and releasing the plastic clips.
    6.  
    7. Remove the weatherstrip.
    8.  
    9. Remove the cowl top cover.
    10.  
    11. Remove the cowl top seal.
    12.  
    13. Remove the windshield washer nozzles and the hoses from cowl top cover.
    14.  
    15. Remove the heater pump from cowl top extension.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the clip attaching the coolant control valve hose to the cowl top extension.
    18.  
    19. Remove cowl top extension.
    20.  

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor wire and front brake hose from the brackets on the front strut.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the connecting rod upper link.
  10.  
  11. Support the wheel hub and steering knuckle assembly with mechanics wire.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shock absorber bolts and nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
  16.  


CAUTION
Do not remove the piston rod lock nut on vehicle.

  1. Remove the coil spring and strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Place the assembly in a vise, then loosen, but do not remove the piston rod lock nut.
  4.  


NOTE
Do not remove piston rod lock nut at this time.

  1. Compress the spring using a spring compressor until the shock absorber mounting insulator can be turned by hand.
  2.

CAUTION
Make sure that the pawls of the two spring compressors are firmly hooked on the spring. The spring compressors must be tightened alternately and evenly so as not to tilt the spring.

  1. Remove the piston rod lock nut and spring.
  2.  
  3. Check the cemented rubber-to-metal portion for separation or cracks. Check the rubber parts for deterioration and replace if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Check the thrust bearing parts for abnormal noise or excessive rattle in axial direction and replace if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Check the spring for cracks, deformation or other damage and replace if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Check the free spring height. The SE model height is 13.39 inch (340 mm) and the SL height is 13.78 inch (350 mm). Replace if not as specified.
  10.  

To install:

  1. When installing the coil spring on strut, it must be positioned as illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper spring seat with alignment mark facing the outer side of vehicle, in line with strut-to-knuckle attachment points.
  4.  
  5. Install and compress the spring.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the piston rod lock nut to 54. ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Installation of the assembly is in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the front strut spacer is positioned as illustrated. Tighten the upper bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (46 Nm) and the lower bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Check that the front wheel alignment

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the front strut upper mounting bracket and the chassis strut tower.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheel.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the 2 front brake anti-lock sensor cable bracket bolts and position the anti-lock sensor cable out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Detach the brake tube from the strut.
  14.  
  15. Support the control arm.
  16.  
  17. Matchmark the knuckle to the strut so it can installed in the same position. This is important for the camber angle of the front wheel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the strut-to-steering knuckle bolts.

  21. Support the strut and remove the 3 upper strut-to-chassis nuts. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
    WARNING
    Never loosen the strut center nut until the spring is compressed or serious injury or vehicle damage may occur.

  23. Place the strut and coil spring assembly in a suitable vise and remove the strut nut cover.
  24.  
  25. Slightly loosen, but do not remove the front strut nut.

If desired, use the following steps to remove the coil spring from the strut.

  1. Using an approved coil spring compressor, compress the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly top nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the following components from the strut assembly:

    Upper mounting bracket
     
    Strut bearing
     
    The bearing seat.
     
    Upper coil spring seat and dust boot
     
    Coil spring
     

  6.  
  7. Slowly release the tension of the coil spring compressor and remove the coil spring from the compressor tool.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil spring insulator and slide the jounce bumper off of the strut assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Slide the jounce bumper onto the strut assembly and install the coil spring insulator.
  2.  
  3. Carefully compress the coil spring with an approved coil spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the following components to the strut assembly:
    NOTE
    Install the coil spring to the strut assembly with the end of the spring in the lower coil spring seat indentation.



    Coil spring
     



    Upper coil spring seat and dust boot
     
    Bearing seat and the bearing
     
    Upper mounting bracket
     

  6.  
  7. Install and tighten the strut assembly nut and tighten the nut to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the strut assembly onto the vehicle and tighten the following:

    Strut-to-body nuts: 29-40 ft. lbs. (39-54 Nm)
     
    Strut-to-knuckle bolts: 101-116 ft. lbs. (137-157 Nm)
     

  10.  
  11. Reattach the brake tube to the strut assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install and tighten the 2 front brake anti-lock sensor cable bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and the adjustable strut electrical connectors, if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cowl top extension as follows:
    1. Remove the wiper arms.
    2.

    7. Remove the weatherstrip.
    8.  
    9. Remove the cowl top cover.

    11. Remove the cowl top seal.
    12.  
    13. Remove the windshield washer nozzles and the hoses from cowl top cover.

    15. Remove the heater pump from cowl top extension.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the clip attaching the coolant control valve hose to the cowl top extension.
    18.  
    19. Remove cowl top extension.
    20.

  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor wire and front brake hose from the brackets on the front strut.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the connecting rod upper link.
  10.  
  11. Support the wheel hub and steering knuckle assembly with mechanics wire.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shock absorber bolts and nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove the piston rod lock nut on vehicle.

  16.  
  17. Remove the coil spring and strut assembly.
  18.  
  19. Place the assembly in a vise, then loosen, but do not remove the piston rod lock nut.
    NOTE
    Do not remove piston rod lock nut at this time.

  20.  
  21. Compress the spring using a spring compressor until the shock absorber mounting insulator can be turned by hand.
    CAUTION
    Make sure that the pawls of the two spring compressors are firmly hooked on the spring. The spring compressors must be tightened alternately and evenly so as not to tilt the spring.

  23. Remove the piston rod lock nut and spring.

  7. Tighten the piston rod lock nut to 54. ft. lbs. (73 Nm).

  9. Installation of the assembly is in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the front strut spacer is positioned as illustrated. Tighten the upper bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (46 Nm) and the lower bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Check that the front wheel alignment
