Removal & Installation



3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel tank as follows:
    1. Drain the fuel from the tank.
    2.  
    3. Remove the filler protector.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the filler tube.
    6.  
    7. Detach any electrical connectors related to the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit.
    8.  
    9. Detach the fuel line quick connectors.
    10.  
    11. Safely support the fuel tank.
    12.  
    13. Remove the tank mounting straps, then lower the tank out of the vehicle.
    14.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the 6 fuel pump bolts.
  12.  
  13. Lift the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. Use care. The fuel level sensor and fuel pump and bracket must be tipped to remove it from the fuel tank. Do not lift the fuel sensor and pump assembly straight out of the fuel tank or damage to the level sensor may occur.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the level sensor to the fuel pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the fuel pump level sensor and the gasket.
  18.  
  19. Discard the gasket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the fuel pump from the bracket.

To install:

  1. Position the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump and bracket and install the 2 bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new level sensor gasket. Carefully install the level sensor and pump assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the 6 fuel pump bolts. Do not over-tighten the bolts. Tighten the bolts to just 17-23 inch lbs. (2-3 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel tank in the reverse order of removal, be sure to tighten the tank mounting straps to 20-26 ft. lbs. (27-35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle. Refill the fuel tank as required.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Verify that the fuel pump relay has been properly installed. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
  12.

  19. Discard the gasket.

  21. Remove the fuel pump from the bracket.

To install:

  1. Position the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump and bracket and install the 2 bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new level sensor gasket. Carefully install the level sensor and pump assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the 6 fuel pump bolts. Do not over-tighten the bolts. Tighten the bolts to just 17-23 inch lbs. (2-3 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel tank in the reverse order of removal, be sure to tighten the tank mounting straps to 20-26 ft. lbs. (27-35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle. Refill the fuel tank as required.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Verify that the fuel pump relay has been properly installed. Start the engine and check for proper operation.

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Open the fuel door and unscrew the fuel filler cap to release the pressure inside the fuel tank.
  8.  
  9. Release the fuel system pressure
  10.  
  11. Remove the center exhaust tube, with mufflers attached.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the equalizer, then disconnect the three parking brake cable mounting brackets on each cable and position the cables out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Remove the fuel tank protector.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the fuel filler hose, recirculation hose and EVAP canister hose at the fuel tank.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the fuel tank mounting straps while supporting the fuel tank.
  20.  
  21. Lower the fuel tank to access the top of the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly electrical connector, and the fuel feed hose from the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the fuel tank.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lock ring using a socket drive handle and tool J-16214.
  28.  
  29. Remove the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank.
  30.  


CAUTION
Do not bend the float arm during removal.

  1. Make sure the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump is free from defects and foreign materials.
  2.

To install:

  1. Install the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly with the fuel feed hose facing the front of the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Turn the lock ring until the lock ring is fully rotated into the fuel tank lock tabs as illustrated.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel tank in the reverse order of removal.
  6.  
  7. Before tightening the fuel tank mounting straps, temporarily install the filler hose, recirculation hose, and signal hose. Tighten the straps to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the quick connector as follows:
    1. Check the connection for damage or any foreign materials.
    2.  
    3. Align the connector with the tube, then insert the connector straight into the tube until a click is heard.
    4.  
    5. After the tube is connected, make sure the connection is secure by pulling on the tube and the connector to make sure they are securely connected.
    6.

  11. Turn the ignition switch to ON with the engine OFF to check the connections for fuel leaks with the electric fuel pump applying fuel pressure to the fuel lines.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and let it idle to check that there are no fuel leaks at the fuel system tube and hose connections.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Open the fuel door and unscrew the fuel filler cap to release the pressure inside the fuel tank.
  8.  
  9. Release the fuel system pressure
  10.  
  11. Remove the center exhaust tube, with mufflers attached.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the equalizer, then disconnect the three parking brake cable mounting brackets on each cable and position the cables out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Remove the fuel tank protector.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the fuel filler hose, recirculation hose and EVAP canister hose at the fuel tank.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the fuel tank mounting straps while supporting the fuel tank.
  20.  
  21. Lower the fuel tank to access the top of the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly electrical connector, and the fuel feed hose from the fuel level sensor unit, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the fuel tank.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lock ring using a socket drive handle and tool J-16214.
  28.  
  29. Remove the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank.
    CAUTION
    Do not bend the float arm during removal.

  31. Make sure the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump is free from defects and foreign materials.

To install:

  1. Install the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly with the fuel feed hose facing the front of the vehicle.
