Front System



2001-02 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater hoses at the bulkhead and plug
     
    Storage bin, then both side covers by the bin and the footlamp, if equipped
     
    Control console bezel (1 screw in the center), then the ashtray assembly
     
    Climate control console screws, pull the console rearward and detach the electrical connectors
     
    4 radio assembly screws and take the radio out of the vehicle
     
    Floor duct and the right and left knee reinforcement plates
     
    ABS control module.

  9. The speed control module, keyless entry module (if equipped) and the passive restraint (air bag) module are all located behind the center console and can be removed after detaching the respective connectors and removing the retaining nuts or screws.
    WARNING
    The control modules are very sensitive to static electricity and can be damaged if exposed to static or stray electrical impulses.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center air duct
     
    2 ground wire bolts, the U-bracket and the 2 console brackets
     
    Glove box and lamp
     
    Accelerator pedal and pedal stop
     
    Floor air duct
     
    Temperature blend side door actuator and mode door actuator by unfastening the attaching bracket bolts and detaching the electrical connections
     
    Center distribution duct
     
    4 evaporator/blower assembly screws, the 4 heater assembly screws and the heater assembly
     
    Hater pipe plate from the assembly
     
    Hater core retainer, disengage the shut-off valve control rod
     
    Hater core from the assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hater core to the case, the retainer and pipe plate
     
    Hater assembly in the vehicle and attach the 4 retaining screws
     
    Center distribution duct, the blend air and mode door actuators
     
    Floor air duct
     
    Accelerator stop and pedal
     
    Glove box and lamp, then the center console and U-brackets
     
    Center air duct, the passive restraint, the keyless entry, the speed control and the ABS modules, as removed
     
    Remaining center console components
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  8.  

2004-06 Models

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cowl top extension as follows:
    1. Remove the wiper arms.
    2.  
    3. Release the clips under cowl top cover and clips on hood-ledge.
    4.  
    5. Remove the seal by releasing the ends from tabs the on the cowl top cover and releasing the plastic clips.
    6.  
    7. Remove the weatherstrip.
    8.  
    9. Remove the cowl top cover.
    10.  
    11. Remove the cowl top seal.
    12.  
    13. Remove the windshield washer nozzles and the hoses from cowl top cover.
    14.  
    15. Remove the heater pump from cowl top extension.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the clip attaching the coolant control valve hose to the cowl top extension.
    18.  
    19. Remove cowl top extension.
    20.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust system.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the front heater hoses from the front heater core.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the high/low pressure pipe from the front expansion valve.
  14.  
  15. Move the two front seats to the rear-most position on the seat track.
  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument panel and console panel as follows:
    1. Remove the center console lower cover.
    2.  
    3. Slide the selector knob cover downwards to reveal the selector knob latch.
    4.  
    5. Gently pry the selector knob latch outward to release it, then lift the selector knob up to remove it.

    7. Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the cluster lid C.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the left hand instrument lower panel.
    10.  
    11. Remove the storage tray.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect the glove box light and remove the right hand instrument lower panel.
    14.  
    15. Remove the glove box housing.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the center console.
    18.  
    19. Remove left hand center console side finisher. Wrap the tip of flat-bladed screwdriver with a cloth when removing the clips from the finishers. When removing or installing the body side welts, do not allow butyl seal to come in contact with the pillar finisher.

    21. Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the combination meter cover and the combination meter.
    22.  
    23. Remove the instrument panel storage bin.
    24.  
    25. Remove the knee protector.
    26.  
    27. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
      CAUTION
      Before servicing the air bag system, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes. When servicing the SRS, do not work from directly in front of air bag module.

    29. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    30.  
    31. Remove the side lids from the retainers retaining the driver-s side air bag.
    32.  
    33. Remove the left and right side bolts.
    34.  
    35. Lift the driver-s side air bag from the steering wheel.
      NOTE
      When Disconnecting or connecting the air bag harness or horn connectors, always pull up to release the black locking tab prior to removing the connector from the air bag component. Always push down to lock the black locking tab after installing the connector to the air bag component. When locked, the black locking tab is level with the connector housing.

    36.  
    37. Disconnect the air bag harness and horn connectors, then remove the driver air bag module.
    38.  
    39. Remove the steering wheel center nut.
    40.  
    41. Remove the steering wheel using puller tools J-1859-A and J-42578.
    42.  
    43. Remove the column cover upper and lower.

    45. Remove wiper washer switch connector, then pinch the tabs at the wiper and washer switch base and slide the switch away from the steering column.

    47. While pressing tabs, pull the light and turn signal switch toward the driver door and disconnect from the base.
    48.  
    49. Remove the screws, release the tab, and remove the spiral cable.
      CAUTION
      Do not disassemble spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

    51. Remove the spiral cable connectors.
      CAUTION
      With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

    52.  
    53. Inspect the steering wheel near the puller holes for damage. If damaged, replace the steering wheel.

    55. Remove the tilt lever knob from the tilt lever by inserting a suitable tool into the slot of the tilt knob, then depress the tab and withdraw the lever knob.

    57. Remove the instrument panel driver-s side lower panel.
    58.  
    59. Remove the steering column cover and ignition key finisher.
    60.  
    61. Remove the mounting screws of the knee protector, then remove the knee protector.
    62.  
    63. Remove the lock nut and bolt, then separate the lower joint from the upper joint.
    64.  
    65. Remove the nuts from steering member, remove the steering column assembly from the steering member.
    66.  
    67. Remove the hole cover seal and clamp.
    68.  
    69. Remove the nuts, then remove the hole cover from the dash panel.
    70.  
    71. Remove the mounting bolt located at the lower side of the lower joint and remove the lower joint from vehicle.

    73. Remove the defrost grille.
    74.  
    75. Remove the right and left hand side defroster assemblies.
    76.  
    77. Remove the right and left side ventilator assemblies.

    79. Remove the right and left front pillar finishers.
    80.  
    81. Remove the instrument panel.

  19. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness at the right and left hand in-line connector brackets, and the fuse block electrical connectors.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the steering member from each side of the vehicle body.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front heater and cooling unit assembly with it attached to the steering member, from the vehicle.
    CAUTION
    Use care not to damage the seats and interior trim panels when removing the front heater and cooling unit assembly with it attached to the steering member.

  25. Remove the front heater and cooling unit assembly from the steering member.
  26.  
  27. Remove the blower motor side cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front blower motor.
  30.  
  31. Remove heater core and evaporator case bottom cover.
  32.  
  33. Remove the blower motor case.
  34.  
  35. Remove the front heater core.
    NOTE
    If the in-cabin microfilters are contaminated from coolant leaking from the heater core, replace the microfilters before installing the new front heater core.

  36.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, refer to the component exploded views for component locations and torque specifications.
  2.  
  3. Replace the O-ring of the low-pressure flexible hose and high-pressure flexible hose with a new one, and apply compressor oil to it when installing it.
  4.  
  5. Fill the engine cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Recharge the A/C system and check for leaks.
  8.  

Rear Auxiliary System



2001-02 Models

NOTE
The rear heater/air conditioning assembly must be removed as a complete unit in order to remove the heater core and/or evaporator core.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater hoses at the bulkhead and plug
     
    Center seats
     
    2 left half seat belt lower anchor bolts
     
    Left rear cargo net retainers, if equipped
     
    Lift gate scuff plate and the 3 screws from the left rear quarter trim panel. Gently pry the rear seat remote control (if equipped) from the trim panel. Disconnect the remote control wiring connector and remove the rear radio control panel. Pull the top of the trim panel away from the body.
     
    Rear climate control panel wiring, if equipped
     
    Left front lap belt guide from the left quarter trim panel and pass the belt through the trim panel
     
    Trim panel from the vehicle
     
    Upper duct from the assembly (6 screws)
     
    Blower motor and resistor wiring
     
    Temperature blend and vent door actuator connectors
     

  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Use the spring lock coupling tool to disconnect and plug the refrigerant line connections from beneath the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 heater/air conditioning assembly bolts and the assembly from the vehicle
     
    Heater core and/or evaporator core from the assembly
     

  16.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core and/or evaporator core into the assembly and the 4 retaining bolts
     

  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Using new O-rings, reconnect the refrigerant lines to the evaporator.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    All wiring connectors
     
    Upper air duct with the 6 screws
     
    Trim panel and pass the lap seat belt through the panel slot
     
    Rear climate control panel
     
    Rear radio and rear remote control
     
    Remaining trim panel and components
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system.
  16.  
  17. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  18.  

2004-06 Models

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Partially drain the engine cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear right hand interior trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the rear heater core hoses from the rear heater core.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear heater core bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear heater core.
