    5. Remove the left and right side bolts.
    6.
    7. Lift the driver-s side air bag from the steering wheel.
    8.

  2.

NOTE
When Disconnecting or connecting the air bag harness or horn connectors, always pull up to release the black locking tab prior to removing the connector from the air bag component. Always push down to lock the black locking tab after installing the connector to the air bag component. When locked, the black locking tab is level with the connector housing.

  1. Disconnect the air bag harness and horn connectors, then remove the driver air bag module.
  2.
  3. Remove the steering wheel center nut.

  9. Remove the wiper washer switch connector, then pinch the tabs at the wiper and washer switch base and slide the switch away from the steering column.
  10.
  11. While pressing the tabs, pull the light and turn signal switch toward the driver door and disconnect from the base.
  12.
  13. Remove the screws, release the tab, and remove the spiral cable.
  14.

CAUTION
Do not disassemble spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  1. Remove the spiral cable connectors.
  2.

CAUTION
With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

  1. Inspect the steering wheel near the puller holes for damage. If damaged, replace the steering wheel.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal, please note the following:
    1. Use the specified tightening torque when installing the high pressure and low-pressure hose connections.
    2.

  2.

Fig. Use the specified tightening torque when installing the high pressure and low-pressure hose connections-2004-05 models

CAUTION
Excessive tightening will damage threads of connection or O-ring.

  1. The O-ring in low-pressure hose connector is larger than that in high-pressure connector. Take care to install the proper O-ring.
  2.
  3. Initially, tighten the nut on the tie-rod outer socket and knuckle arm to the specification shown in the exploded view illustration of 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Then tighten further to align nut groove with the first pin hole so that the cotter pin can be installed. The tightening torque must not exceed 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  4.

  1. Refill the power steering system and bleed after installation.
  2.

The power steering gear is held in position by 2 steering gear brackets and insulators. Note that the housing may move slightly when the steering wheel is turned. If the housing moves more than 0.080 inch (2mm), replace the steering gear insulators. If one or both of the brackets move, check the torque of the bracket bolts. The correct torque for these bolts is 54-72 ft. lbs. (73-97 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.
  3. Place a drain pan under the steering rack.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

Brake master cylinder remote reservoir bracket screws. Position the reservoir out of the way and secure with wire.

Junction block/high pressure line from the steering rack. Position the junction block and line out of the way.

    Both front wheels

    Front sway bar

Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles

Lower steering column shaft clamp bolt

Power steering fluid return hose and position out of the way.

The steering rack clamp bracket bolts

  6.
  7. Lower the steering rack from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. Carefully slide the steering gear rack and pinion assembly in place from the left side of the vehicle. Position the input shaft so it is just below the lower steering column shaft clamp.
  2.
  3. Raise the steering gear until the plastic aligning tab on the input shaft enters the clamp bolt gap on the lower column shaft. Do not install the clamp bolt yet.

  4.
  5. Examine the steering gear brackets. They should be marked UP with arrows pointing to one end of the bracket. Be sure the brackets are installed correctly. Tighten the steering gear bracket bolts to 54-72 ft. lbs. (73-97Nm) in sequence, working counterclockwise from the number 1 bolt (upper right side).
  6.
  7. Install or connect the following:

Fluid return line to the steering gear

Steering column shaft clamp bolt. Tighten the bolt to 17-22 ft lbs. (24-29 Nm). Install the dust cover.

    Tie rod ends

    Stabilizer bar

Wheel. Tighten the lug nuts to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).

Junction block. Tighten the high-pressure line to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).

    Brake master cylinder reservoir

  8.
  9. Check for leaks and proper operation.
