CAUTION
The compressed refrigerant used in the air conditioning system expands into the atmosphere at a temperature of 2°F (-16°C) or lower. This will freeze any surface, including your eyes, that it contacts. In addition, the refrigerant decomposes into a poisonous gas in the presence of a flame. Do not open or disconnect any part of the air conditioning system until you have read the SAFETY WARNINGS information.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove all the necessary equipment in order to gain access to the compressor mounting bolts.
  4.
  5. Remove the compressor drive belt.
  6.

To facilitate removal of the compressor belt, remove the idler pulley and bracket as an assembly beforehand from the underside of the car.

  1. Using an approved recovery/recycling machine, discharge the air conditioning system.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and plug the refrigerant lines with a clean shop towel.
  4.

Be sure to use 2 wrenches (one to loosen the fitting and one to hold the fitting in place) when disconnecting the refrigerant lines.

  1. Disconnect and tag all electrical connections.
  2.
  3. Remove the compressor mounting bolts. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the compressor on the engine and evenly torque all the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 33-44 ft. lbs. (45-60 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect all the electrical connections and unplug and reconnect all refrigerant lines using new O-rings coated with clean refrigerant oil.
  4.
  5. Install all the necessary equipment that was removed to gain access to the compressor mounting bolts.
  6.
  7. Install the idler pulley and bracket
  8.
  9. Install and adjust the drive belt.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. Evacuate, charge and leak test the system as required. Make sure the oil level is correct for the compressor.
  14.
  15. Check the A/C system for proper operation.
  16.

Do not attempt to the leave the compressor on its side or upside down for more than a couple minutes, as the oil in the compressor will enter the low pressure chambers. Be sure to always replace the O-rings.
