Wheel Sensor Ring

Print

DESCRIPTION

The wheel sensor ring is used to trigger the wheel speed sensor. The sensor ring is mounted to either the front CV-joint or the rear wheel bearing/hub assembly.

The ring gear teeth provide a method of accurately changing the air gap between the sensor and ring gear. As the ring gear rotates, the changing air gap directly affects the sensor's magnetic field; this causes the voltage signal to vary between a high and a low output. The ECU detects the rate of this change and thus, calculates the wheel speed.

TESTING

Testing of the wheel sensor ring is limited to a visual inspection of the ring. Inspect the ring for cracks, damaged or missing teeth. If the ring shows any signs of damage, replace the ring and recheck the wheel speed sensor operation.

Fig. Fig. 2: Proper method of installing the sensor ring to the outer CV-joint

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the front halfshaft as outlined in Suspension & Steering .
  4.
  5. Use a suitable puller to press the sensor ring from the CV-joint.
  6.

To install:

Always install a new sensor ring. Do NOT attempt to reuse the old sensor ring.

  1. Properly support the CV-joint in a vise or a similar holding fixture.
  2.
  3. Place the NEW sensor ring around the CV-joint.
  4.
  5. Use a hammer and a block of wood to install the sensor ring. Make certain the ring is completely seated around the CV-joint.
  6.
  7. Following proper procedures, reinstall the halfshaft.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle and verify proper ABS operation.
  10.

  5. Use a suitable puller to press the sensor ring from the wheel hub.
  6.

To install:

Always install a new sensor ring. Do NOT attempt to reuse the old sensor ring.

  1. Place the NEW sensor ring around the wheel hub.
