CONTROL CABLE



1982-90 Vehicles

  1. Place the control lever In P .
  2.  
  3. Connect the control cable end to the lever in the transaxle unit and tighten the cable securing bolt.
  4.  
  5. Move the lever to the No.1 position. Make sure that the lever works smoothly and quietly.
  6.  
  7. Place the control lever in P .
  8.  
  9. Make sure that the lever locks in Park. Remove the cable adjusting outer nut and loosen the inner nut. Connect the control cable to the trunnion and install the outer nut.
  10.  
  11. Pull on the cable a couple of times, then tighten the outer nut until it just contacts the bracket. Tighter the inner nut securely. The length of the cable between the inner end of the rubber boot and the outer end of the rod should be 120.5mm.
  12.  
  13. Check all parts to ensure smooth working order. Check the cable spring cotter pin to make sure that it is assembled as shown.

  1. Place the shift selector in P .
  2.  
  3. Loosen the control cable locknut and place the manual shaft in the P position.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the cable using the long hole in the control cable at the transaxle end.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the locknut.
  8.  
  9. Move the selector from P to 1 and make sure that the selector lever can be moved smoothly and without any sliding noise.
  10.  
  11. Apply heavy grease to all moving parts.

1993-96 Vehicles

  1. Place the shift selector in P .
  2.  
  3. Loosen the control cable locknut and place the manual shaft in the P position.
  4.  
  5. Pull the control cable in the direction of extending the cable with 1.5 lbs. (6.9 N) of force.
  6.  
  7. Retract the control cable 0.039 in. (1.0mm) and tighten the control cable locknut.
  8.  
  9. Move the selector from P to 1 and make sure that the selector lever can be moved smoothly and without any sliding noise.
  10.  
  11. Apply heavy grease to all moving parts.
  12.  

THROTTLE CABLE (WIRE)

The throttle wire is adjusted by means of double nuts on the carburetor or throttle body side. Refer to the Illustration for details. If this adjustment is out of range, the transaxle shift patterns will change. This can affect the durability and driveability of the transaxle.

  1. Loosen the throttle wire double nuts A and B on the carburetor side.
  2.  
  3. With the throttle drum set at P1 (fully open), move the fitting Q fully in the direction T and tighten nut B in direction U .
  4.  
  5. Reverse nut B 1 to 1.5 turns in direction T and tighten nut a while holding the throttle in the full open position.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the throttle wire stroke L is within the range of 1.079-1.236 in. (27.431.4mm).

The throttle wire is adjusted by means of double nuts on the throttle body side. Refer to the illustration for details. If this adjustment is out of range, the transaxle shift patterns will change. This can affect the durability and driveability of the transaxle.

This procedure applies only to the RL4F03A transaxle. The RE4FO3V transaxles do NOT use a throttle wire input.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF . Mark the throttle wire to aid in measurement.
  2.  
  3. While pressing the lock plate, move the adjusting tube in the direction T .
  4.  
  5. Return the lock plate. The adjusting tube is locked at this time.
  6.  
  7. Move the throttle drum from P2 to P1 quickly. The adjusting tube moves in direction U while depressing the lock plate.
  8.  
  9. Make sure the throttle wire stroke L is within the range of 1.079-1.236 in. (27.431.4mm) between full throttle and idle.
