Power Brake Booster

1982-90 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the master cylinder brake pipes. Remove the master cylinder mounting nuts and pull the master cylinder assembly away from the power booster.
  2.  
  3. Detach the vacuum lines from the booster.
  4.  
  5. Detach the booster pushrod at the pedal clevis.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the booster from under the dash and lift it out of the engine compartment.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the brake booster. Torque the master cylinder-to-booster nuts to 72-96 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm), and the booster-to-firewall nuts to 72-96 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Adjust the length of the pushrod so that the distance between the pushrod clevis hole and the rear face of the booster is 5.9 in. (150mm) for 1982-86 vehicles. The output rod length from the end of the rod to the front face of the booster should be 0.4045-0.4144 in. (10.275-10.525mm) for the 1987-90 vehicles.
  4.  
  5. Connect the vacuum lines to brake booster.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check brake operation.
  8.  

1991-96 Vehicles

CAUTION
If the vehicle is equipped with SRS, the air bag system must be disabled prior to attempting this repair procedure. Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury.

  1. If applicable, disarm the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the master cylinder from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Detach the vacuum line from the booster.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the booster pushrod at the pedal clevis.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt the booster from under the dash and lift it out of the engine compartment.
  10.  

To install:
  1. On vehicles without ABS, before installing the brake booster, adjust the length of the pushrod so that the distance between the pushrod clevis hole and the rear face of the booster is 4.92 in. (125mm).
  2.  
  3. Install the brake booster to the vehicle and secure with retaining nuts from inside the vehicle. Tighten the retaining nuts to 9-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the master cylinder assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the vacuum lines to brake booster.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check brake operation.
  10.
