Injector Nozzle Service

CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF. Properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Also observe all safety practices outlined earlier in the Fuel System Safety Precautions. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.

  1. Following proper procedures, relieve fuel system residual pressure.

Always replace the injector nozzle gaskets at the bottom of the bore when removing the injector nozzles for service. Make sure the gasket is installed correctly.

  1. Remove the injection tubes on the nozzle side and loosen the tubes on the pump side.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spill tubes from the injector nozzles.
  4.  
  5. Remove the injector and gasket.
  6.  
  7. Clean the injector hole with a soft brush and carburetor cleaner.
  8.  
  9. Install new nozzle gaskets as shown in the figure.
  10.  
  11. Place the nozzle in a soft vise and nut while holding the body in the vise.
  12.  
  13. Arrange the parts in order of disassembly.
  14.  
  15. Clean all parts with clean diesel fuel or carburetor cleaner. Use special brushes and nozzle cleaning tools so no internal damage is done.
  16.  
  17. After removing all sludge and dirt, assemble the nozzle as disassembled.
  18.  
  19. Install the new gasket and nozzle. Torque the nozzle to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm). Install the injection tubes loosely. Do not tighten at this time.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the fuel system by loosening the priming pump vent screw and pump the plunger on top of the filter assembly.
  22.  
  23. Torque the injection tubes at the pump to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Crank the engine until fuel comes out of all tube fittings.
  26.  
  27. Torque the tube fittings to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check operation.
