SECONDARY SPARK TEST

Using a spark tester, verify that spark is present at a plug wire. If a spark tester is unavailable, you can test for spark as follows:

  1. Disconnect a spark plug wire from the spark plug.
  2.
  3. Wrap a thick, dry cloth around the spark plug wire boot and hold the end of the wire approximately 1 / 4 in. (6mm) from a good electrical ground.
  4.

CAUTION
Be extremely careful holding the spark plug wire while cranking the engine. The secondary ignition circuit can generate as much as 50,000 volts.

  1. Using a remote starter switch, or with the help of an assistant, crank the engine while observing the end of the spark plug wire. A strong blue spark should be observed jumping the gap between the wire and the ground. If a weak spark or no spark is present, the ignition coil may be faulty. Test the ignition coil, as described later in this section.
  2.
  3. Reconnect the spark plug wire.
  4.
