1982-90 Engines
EXCEPT E15ET ENGINE

If any fuel system components must be removed, make to relieve the fuel system pressure first.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.
  3. Remove the under cover and dust covers, if equipped.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner or collector assembly, if necessary for access.
  6.
  7. Remove the heat shield(s), if equipped.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  10.
  11. Remove or disconnect the temperature sensors, oxygen sensors, air induction pipes, brackets and other attachments from the manifold.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the EAI and EGR tubes from their fittings if so equipped.
  14.
  15. Loosen and remove the exhaust manifold attaching nuts and remove the manifold(s) from the block. Discard the exhaust manifold gaskets and replace with new.
  16.
  17. Clean the gasket surfaces and check the manifold for cracks and warpage.
  18.

To install:
  1. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Torque the manifold fasteners from the center outward in several stages to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm), all engines except CA16DE, CA18DE and SR20DE. Torque those engines to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the EAI and EGR tubes to the connections on the manifold as necessary.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the temperature sensors, oxygen sensors, air induction pipes, bracketry and other attachments to the manifold.
  6.
  7. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold or turbo outlet using a new gasket.
  8.
  9. Install the heat shields.
  10.
  11. Install the air cleaner or collector assembly.
  12.
  13. Install the under covers and dust covers.
  14.
  15. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  16.

E15ET TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
  1. Refer to the Turbocharger Removal and Installation procedure in this section, and remove the turbocharger.
  2.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold's heat shields, the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head.
  4.
  5. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  6.

To install:
  1. Use new gaskets and install the manifold. Torque the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm), the turbocharger-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm), the exhaust outlet-to-turbocharger nuts to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm), the converter's 10mm mounting bracket bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm) or 8mm mounting bracket bolt to 78-120 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm), the oil pressure tube fitting-to-turbocharger to 14-22 ft. lbs. (19-30 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the remaining components.
  4.

1991-96 GA16DE and SR20DE Engine

If any fuel system components must be removed, be sure to relieve the fuel system pressure first, as described in Section 5.

  10.
  11. Remove or disconnect the temperature sensors, oxygen sensors, air induction pipes.
  12.
  13. Remove manifold support brackets.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the EAI and EGR tubes from their fittings if so equipped.
  16.
  17. Loosen and remove the exhaust manifold attaching nuts and remove the manifold(s) from the block. Discard the exhaust manifold gaskets and replace with new.
  18.
  19. Clean the gasket surfaces and check the manifold for cracks and warpage.
  20.

To install:
  1. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Torque the manifold fasteners from the center outward in several stages.
    1. GA16DE engines-Tighten mounting nuts with washers to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
    2.
    3. SR20DE engines-Tighten mounting nuts with washers to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm).
    4.

  2.
  3. Install or connect the temperature sensors, oxygen sensors and air induction pipes.
  4.
  5. Connect the EAI and EGR tubes to the connections on the manifold as necessary.
  6.
  7. Install the manifold support brackets.
  8.
  9. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold using a new gasket. Tighten the manifold nuts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-33 Nm) for GA16DE engine models or 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm) for SR20DE engine models.
  10.
  11. Install the heat shields.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner or collector assembly.
  14.
  15. Install the engine under covers.
  16.
  17. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  18.
  19. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
