Without Removing Cylinder Head
  1. Remove the rocker arm (valve) cover as outlined in this section.
  2.
  3. Remove the rocker arm assembly (engines with rocker arms). Remove the camshaft and valve lifters (engines without rocker arms).
  4.
  5. Remove the spark plug of the affected cylinder.
  6.
  7. Install a spark plug adapter and air chuck into the spark plug hole. Connect the air chuck to a compressed air source. This procedure fills the cylinder with compressed air so the valve does not fall into the cylinder when the valve spring is removed.
  8.

The cylinder must be on at TDC of its compression stroke in order to follow this procedure. On the compression stroke, the cylinder's valves will be closed allowing the air pressure to hold the valve in position. The engine must therefore be turned slightly for each cylinder's valve seals.

  1. Using the correct valve spring compressor, remove the valve keepers, spring retainer and spring as outlined in this section.
  2.

If the air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any removal of air pressure will allow the valves to fall into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this.

  1. Using care not to damage the valve guide top, remove the valve seal from the cylinder head.
  2.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the valve stem with engine oil and install the seal onto the valve guide. Make sure it is seated properly.
  2.
  3. Install the spring or springs, spring retainer and compress the spring with the spring compressor as outlined in this section.
  4.
  5. Install the spring keepers and make sure they are properly seated before releasing the spring compressor.
  6.
  7. Remove the air chuck and adapter.
  8.
  9. Install the spark plug, camshaft or rocker arms.
  10.
  11. Install the rocker arm shaft.
  12.
  13. Install the remaining components, start the engine and check for proper operation and leaks.
  14.

With Cylinder Head Removed
  1. Remove the cylinder head from the vehicle as outlined in this section.
  2.
  3. Remove the camshaft or rocker arm assembly.
  4.
  5. Using a C-type spring compressor, remove the valve keepers, retainer and spring.
  6.
  7. Remove the valve seal from the valve guide.
  8.

To install:
  6.
  7. Install the camshaft or rocker arms as outlined in this section.
  8.
  9. Install the cylinder head and remaining components.
  10.
