1982-86 Vehicles

Always use a new nut when installing the ball joint to the control arm.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the control arm's eccentric washer and the mount.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower ball joint bolts from the control arm.
  8.  

If equipped with a stabilizer bar, disconnect it from the control arm.

  1. Remove the control arm-to-body bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the gusset.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  6.  

To install:

Failure to properly position the matchmarked washer will alter the front end alignment setting.

  1. Install the lower control arm with the eccentric washer on the vehicle, being careful to align the matchmarks. Tighten the gusset-to-body bolts to 65-87 ft. lbs. (88-118 Nm); the control arm securing nut to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm); the lower ball joint-to-control arm nuts to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm); and the stabilizer bar-to-control arm to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm) for 2WD Sentra and Pulsar or 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) for 4WD Sentra.

  3. Reconnect the stabilizer if so equipped to the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  

When installing the link, tighten the nut securing the link spindle to the gusset. Final tightening should be made with the weight of the car on the wheels.

A ball joint removal tool will be required for this operation.

  1. Raise the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel bearing locknut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tie rod ball joint with a puller.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower strut-to-knuckle mounting bolts and separate the strut from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Separate the outer end of the halfshaft from the steering knuckle by carefully tapping it with a rubber mallet.
  10.  

Be sure to cover the CV-joints with a shop rag.

  1. Using a ball joint removal tool, separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the control arm's eccentric washer and the mount.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt and remove the transverse link and ball joint as an assembly.
  6.  

To install:

Failure to properly position the matchmarked washer will alter the front end alignment setting.

  1. Install the lower control arm to the vehicle, being careful to align the matchmarks on the eccentric washer and mount.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect the ball joint and halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Connect the strut to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the tie rod ball joint.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the wheel bearing locknut.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and make sure the tab on the transverse link clamp is pointing in the proper direction. Final tightening of all bolts should take place with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels. Check wheel alignment.
