REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1983-90 Pulsar

CAUTION
To avoid rendering the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) inoperative, which could lead to personal injury or death in the event of a severe frontal collision, extreme caution must be taken when servicing the electrically related systems. All SRS electrical wiring harnesses and connectors are covered with YELLOW outer insulation. Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS (air bag).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the tilt adjusting lever and completely lower the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the mounting screws and the instrument cluster hood.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster screws, pull the cluster forward, then disconnect the speedometer cable and the harness connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the instrument cluster and attaching screws.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect all electrical connections and speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect steering column and cover.
  6.  
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start engine and check for proper operation of all components.
  10.  

1982-86 Sentra
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the 2 screws from the lower side of the instrument hood and remove it.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 screws from the top of the instrument cluster, pull it out to disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove it.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster in reverse of the removal procedure.
  6.  

1987-90 Sentra
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the 2 screws from underneath the cluster bezel and the 2 from the underside of the cluster hood. Then, use a thin, flat object to depress the locking pawl in the fastener located at the top left of the cluster bezel; then, slide this fastener out of the dash. Now, slide the cluster bezel out of the dash.

  3. Remove the mounting screws from the underside and front of the instrument cluster and then pull it out of the dash panel far enough for you to gain access to the electrical connectors. Disconnect these connectors and then remove the cluster by sliding it out of the dash.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster by reversing the removal procedure.
  6.  

1991-94 Sentra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Remove the steering wheel and the steering column covers as outlined in Suspension & Steering .
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster lid by removing its screws.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster screws.
  6.  
  7. Gently withdraw the cluster from the instrument pad and disconnect all wiring and speedometer cable. Make sure the wires are marked clearly to avoid confusion during installation. Be careful not to damage the printed circuit.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cluster.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster and connect all wiring and the speedometer cable.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument cluster screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the instrument cluster lid and its screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel and the steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable and check operation.
  10.  

1995-96 Sentra

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable. Wait 10 minutes before continuing with this procedure so that the SRS (air bag system) will have sufficient time to discharge.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the combination switch mounting screws and disconnect the wiring connectors to the switch. Remove the combination switch from the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 instrument cluster bezel mounting screws. Using a small, flat-bladed screwdriver, disengage the cluster bezel retaining pawls and metal clips. Remove the cluster bezel from the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument cluster mounting screws and pull the cluster out of the instrument panel far enough to disconnect the wiring harness connectors from behind the assembly. Remove the cluster assembly from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Place the instrument cluster into the instrument panel and reconnect the wiring harness connectors behind the cluster assembly. Place the cluster into position, install and tighten the mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster bezel into the instrument panel. Be sure to engage the 5 retaining pawls and 2 metal clips. Install and tighten the 2 bezel mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the combination switch onto the steering column and reconnect the wiring connectors to the switch. Install and tighten the 3 mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper and lower steering column covers and tighten the mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the positive battery cable, then reconnect the negative battery cable.
