  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Set "TEMP'' lever to maximum "HOT'' position and drain the engine coolant.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine compartment.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the choke control cable, harness connectors, hood latch control cable, speedometer cable, and radio aerial cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the 2 screws from the lower side of the instrument hood and remove it.
  6.
  7. Remove the 2 screws from the top of the instrument cluster, pull it out to disconnect the electrical connectors, and remove it.
  8.
  9. Slide the ashtray out and then unscrew and remove the ashtray slider bracket.
  10.
  11. Remove the radio knobs and bezel. Disconnect the antenna and power cable, remove the attaching bolts, and remove the radio.
  12.
  13. Remove the heater control bezel. Disconnect the heater cables and electrical connector and remove the heater control from the dash.
  14.
  15. Remove the instrument panel section located just above the glovebox drawer by removing the attaching bolt on the right and then unclipping the panel section. Tilt the glove box drawer downward, work the hinge pins out of the dash at top and bottom and remove it.
  16.
  17. Remove the small panels out of the top left and top right of the dash by prying them very gently. Remove the 2 small screw covers from either side of the center of the dash at the top.
  18.
  19. Remove the 4 bolts from the bottom of the instrument panel assembly (one at each corner and 2 below the radio). Then, support the assembly (perhaps with the help of an assistant). Remove the 4 bolts (one under each cover) that support the assembly at the top and remove it from the car.
  20.

To install:
  1. With a helper, put the instrument panel into position and hold it there. Then, install the 4 bolts that fasten the unit at the top.
  2.
  3. Install the 4 bolts that fasten the unit at the bottom. Install the bolt covers on the top of the panel.
  4.
  5. Install the glovebox and adjacent instrument panel section by reversing the removal procedure.
  6.
  7. Install the heater control, connect the cables, and adjust them. Connect the electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Install the radio by reversing the removal procedure.
  10.
  11. Install the ashtray slider and the ashtray.
  12.
  13. Install the instrument cluster in reverse of the removal procedure. Install the instrument hood.
  14.
  15. Connect the choke control cable, harness connectors, hood latch control cable, speedometer cable, and radio aerial cable.
  16.
  17. Refill the engine with coolant. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and check for leaks. Refill the cooling system after the engine has reached operating temperature and has then been allowed to cool.

This is a very lengthy procedure, requiring complete removal of the instrument panel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the upper defroster grilles by gently pulling them upward to free the 8 clips fastening each of them in place.
  2.
  3. Slide a thin, flat instrument in to release the clips by depressing the tangs on top and on the bottom of the center and right side air discharge grilles. Then, slide them out of the instrument panel.
  4.
  5. Remove the 4 bolts from the top of the instrument panel cover (these are accessible at either end of the slots for the defroster grilles, removed earlier).
  6.
  7. Remove the 2 screws from underneath the cluster bezel and the 2 from the underside of the cluster hood. Then, use a thin, flat object to depress the locking pawl in the fastener located at the top left of the cluster bezel; then, slide this fastener out of the dash. Now, slide the cluster bezel out of the dash.
  8.
  9. Remove the instrument panel cover from the instrument panel by pulling it straight back so as to disengage the mounting pawls from the panel underneath, and remove it.
  10.
  11. Remove the mounting screws from the underside and front of the instrument cluster and then pull it out of the dash panel far enough for you to gain access to the electrical connectors. Disconnect these connectors and then remove the cluster by sliding it out of the dash.
  12.
  13. Remove the large screw cover from the rear part of the rear console. Remove the console mounting screw located underneath it. Remove the small screw cover from the front of the console and remove the screw underneath that. Remove the rear console.
  14.
  15. Remove the screw from either side of the front console. Remove the gearshift knob by unscrewing it. Then, remove the forward section of the console.
  16.
  17. Slide out the ashtray drawer, depress the lock, and then remove it. Remove the 2 mounting screws (accessible from underneath) and then remove the ashtray slider.
  18.
  19. Remove the 2 mounting screws and then remove the radio/heater control bezel. Disconnect the electrical connector for the heater control. Disconnect the air door cables the control actuates.
  20.
  21. Then, remove the 2 mounting screws and pull the radio out for access to the electrical connector and antenna cable connector. Disconnect these and remove the radio.
  22.
  23. Remove its mounting bolt and then disconnect the Super Multiple Junction connector from under the dash.
  24.
  25. Remove the 2 mounting screws and remove the fuse block.
  26.
  27. Remove the hood latch release.
  28.
  29. Remove the left and right side instrument panel mounting screws, accessible from underneath and located near the corners of the unit. Then, pull the unit outward and remove it from the vehicle.
  30.

To install:
  1. Put the instrument panel into position so the mounting pawls line it up and install the right and left side mounting screws.
  2.
  3. Install the hood release and fuse block. Connect the Super Multiple Junction connector and install its mounting bolt.
  4.
  5. Install the radio and the heater control.
  6.
  7. Install the ashtray slider and ashtray.
  8.
  9. Install the front console and then the rear console. Install the gearshift knob.
  10.
  11. Put the instrument cluster into position, connect all the electrical connectors and install it.
  12.
  13. Install the instrument cluster bezel.
  14.
  15. Install the instrument panel cover.
  16.
  17. Install the center and right air discharge grilles.
  18.
  19. Install the upper defroster grilles. Reconnect the battery and refill the cooling system.
