Handbrake adjustments are generally not needed, unless the cables have stretched.

There is an adjusting nut on the cable under the car, usually at the end of the front cable and near the point at which the two cables from the rear wheels come together (the equalizer). Some models also have a turnbuckle in the rear cable to compensate for cable stretching.

1982-86 Vehicles
  1. Adjust the rear brakes with the parking brake fully released.
  2.
  3. Apply the hand brake lever so that it is 6-7 notches from its fully released position.
  4.
  5. Adjust the parking brake turnbuckle so that the rear brakes are locked.
  6.
  7. Release the parking brake. The wheels should turn freely. If not, loosen the parking brake adjuster until the wheels turn with no drag.

Make sure the rear brakes are properly adjusted prior to making any adjustments to the parking brake.

  1. Make sure that the rear brakes are in good condition.
  2.
  3. Carefully remove the dust boot from around the parking brake lever.
  4.
  5. The adjustment is made by determining the amount of force needed to pull up on the lever. A force of 44 lbs. (195 N) should be needed to raise the lever 7-8 notches for drum brake vehicles or 8-9 notches for disc brake vehicles.
  6.
  7. To adjust the pull, raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands. There is an adjusting nut on the hand brake clevis rod. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting nut to establish the correct pull.
  8.
  9. Tighten the adjuster locknut.
  10.
  11. With the parking brake released, the rear wheels should turn freely. When the parking brake lever is pulled up 6-8 notches, the rear wheels should not turn.
  12.
  13. Bend the parking brake warning lamp switch plate so that the warning lamp illuminates when the parking brake lever is raised 1 notch. The warning lamp should extinguish after the parking brake lever is completely released.
