If the detents cannot be felt or the pointer indicator is improperly aligned while shifting from the P range to range 1 , the linkage should be adjusted.
- Place the shifter in the P position.
- Loosen the lock-nuts.
- Tighten the outer lock-nut X until it touches the trunnion, pulling the selector lever toward the R range side without pushing the button.
- Back off the outer lock-nut X1 / 41 / 2 turns and then tighten the inner lock-nut Y to 511 ft. lbs. (815 Nm).
- Move the selector lever from P to 1 . Make sure it moves smoothly.
If late model vehicle has an automatic transmission interlock system. This interlock system prevents the transmission selector from being shifted from the P position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
