After the wheel bearings have been removed or replaced or the front axle has been reassembled be sure to adjust wheel bearing preload. Refer to the Adjustment service procedure below. On the 1989-92 240SX there is just one wheel bearing, pressed into the hub and no adjusting cap. Refer to the exploded views of the Front Axle Hub Assembly. Review the complete service procedure.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels and the brake caliper assemblies.
  4.  

Brake hoses do not need to be disconnected from the brake caliper assemblies. Make sure the brake hoses are secure and do not let caliper assemblies hang unsupported from the vehicle.

  1. Work off center hub cap by using thin tool. If necessary tap around it with a soft hammer while removing.
  2.  
  3. Pry off cotter pin and take out adjusting cap and wheel bearing lock nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel hub with disc brake rotor from spindle with bearings installed. Remove the outer bearing from the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove inner bearing and grease seal from hub using long brass drift pin or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. If it is necessary to replace the bearing outer races, drive them out of the hub with a brass drift pin and mallet.
  10.  
  11. Install the outer bearing race with a tool (KV401021S0 special tool number) until it seats in the hub flush.
  12.  

Place a large glob of grease into the palm of one hand and push the bearing through it with a sliding motion. The grease must be forced through the side of the bearing and in between each roller. Continue until the grease begins to ooze out the other side through the gaps between the rollers. The bearing must be completely packed with grease.

  1. Pack each wheel bearing with high temperature wheel bearing grease. Pack hub and hub cap with the recommended wheel bearing grease up to shaded portions. Refer to the illustration.
  2.  
  3. Install the inner bearing and grease seal in the proper position in the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel hub with disc brake rotor to the spindle.
  6.  
  7. Install the outer wheel bearing, lock washer, wheel bearing lock nut, adjusting cap, cotter pin (always use a new cotter pin and O-ring for installation after adjustment), spread cotter pin then install the O-ring and dust cap.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake caliper assemblies and bleed brakes if necessary. Install the front wheels.
  10.  

ADJUSTMENT



Rear Wheel Drive

See Figure 10

Before adjustment clean all parts. Apply wheel bearing grease sparingly to the threaded portion of spindle and contact surface between lock washer and outer wheel bearing.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely, remove the front wheels and the brake caliper assemblies.
  2.  
  3. Torque wheel bearing lock nut to 18-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  

On the 1989-92 240SX model, the wheel bearing lock nut torque is 108-159 ft. lbs. On this model make sure that the wheel bearing is properly seated and then just torque it to the specification. There is just one wheel bearing and no adjusting cap on this model, just use a new cotter pin after the torque specification is reached.

  1. Turn the wheel hub several times in both directions to seat wheel bearing correctly.
  2.  
  3. Again tighten wheel bearing nut to specification 18-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Loosen lock nut approximately 60°. Install adjusting cap and align groove of nut with hole in spindle. If alignment cannot be obtained, change position of adjusting cap. Also, if alignment cannot be obtained, loosen lock nut slightly but not more than 15°.
  6.  

If possible measure the wheel bearing preload and axial play. Repeat above procedures until correct starting torque is obtained. Refer to the illustration.

  1. Spread the cotter pin and install hub cap with a new O-ring.
  2.  
  3. Install caliper assemblies and front wheels.
  4.
