Lower Control Arm (Transverse Link)

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



200SX and 240SX

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.

  1. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the side rod (steering arm) ball joint and separate the ball joint from the side rod using the proper tool.
  2.  
  3. Separate the steering knuckle arm from the MacPherson strut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tension rod and stabilizer bar from the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts or bolts connecting the lower control arm (transverse link) to the suspension crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm (transverse link) with the suspension ball joint and knuckle arm still attached.
  10.  
  11. When installing the control arm, temporarily tighten the nuts and/or bolts securing the control arm to the suspension crossmember. Tighten them fully only after the vehicle is sitting on its wheels. Lubricate the ball joints after assembly. Refer to the illustrations for additional specifications. Check wheel alignment.

1982-89 Stanza 2WD and 4WD Wagon

See Figure 3

Always use new nuts when installing the ball joint assembly to the control arm.

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower ball joint bolts from the control arm.
  4.  

If equipped with a stabilizer bar, disconnect it at the control arm. Refer to the necessary service procedures.

  1. Remove the control arm-to-body bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the gusset.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Always replace the ball joint retaining bolts and cotter pins after each disassembly. Refer to the illustrations as guide for additional specifications.

Final tightening should be made with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels.

On the Stanza Wagon, make sure to torque the gusset bolts in the proper sequence.

1990-92 Stanza

See Figure 4

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt and remove the stabilizer bar. The bar is removed by unfastening the clamp bolts and the bolts that hold the bar to the transverse link gusset plate. When removing the clamps, note the relationship between the clamp and paint mark on the bar.

  1. Unbolt and remove the transverse link and gusset.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the transverse link, gusset and bushings for cracks, damage and deformation.
  4.  
  5. To install, bolt the transverse link and gusset into place. Lower the vehicle and torque the bolts and nuts in the proper sequence as illustrated. Torque the nuts to 30-35 ft. lbs. and the bolts to 87-108 ft. lbs. The vehicle must at curb weight and the tires must be on the ground. After installation is complete, check the front end alignment.
