Nissan Stanza/200SX/240SX 1982-1992 Repair Guide

Electronic Fuel Injection (E.F.I.)

Print

These cars use a rather complex electronic fuel injection system which is controlled by a series of temperature, altitude (for California) and air flow sensors which feed information into a central control unit. The control unit then relays an electronic signal to the injector nozzle at each cylinder, which allows a predetermined amount of fuel into the combustion chamber.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

1982-83 200SX (Z Series Engine)

See Figure 1

Always refer to the underhood specifications sticker for any additional applicable procedures.

  1. Start the engine and run it until the water temperature indicator points to the middle of the temperature gauge. It might be quicker to take a short spin down the road and back.
  2.
  3. Open the engine hood. Run the engine at about 2,000 rpm for a few minutes with the transmission in Neutral and all accessories off. If you have not already done so, check the ignition timing and make sure it is correct. Hook up a tachometer as per the manufacturer's instructions. For automatic transmission, set the parking brake, block the wheels and set the shift selector in the Drive position.
  4.
  5. Run the engine at idle speed and disconnect the hose from the air induction pipe, then plug the pipe. Allow the engine to run for about a minute at idle speed.
  6.

  1. Check the idle against the specifications given earlier in this section. Adjust the idle speed by turning the idle speed adjusting screw, located near the air cleaner. Turn the screw clockwise for slower idle speed and counterclockwise for faster idle speed.
  2.
  3. Connect the hose and disconnect the tachometer. If idle speed increases, adjust it with the idle speed adjusting screw.
  4.

1984-861/2200SX (CA20E and CA18ET Engines)1984-86 Stanza with the CA20E Engine

See Figures 2 and 3

Always refer to the underhood specifications sticker for any additional applicable procedures.

  1. Start the engine and warm the engine so it reaches normal operating temperature. The water temperature indicator should be in the middle of the gauge.
  2.
  3. Then race the engine to 2,000-3,000 rpm a few times under no load and then allow it to return to the idle speed.

Fig. Fig. 3: Adjusting the idle speed by turning the idle adjusting screw

  1. Connect a tachometer according to the instrument manufacturer's directions.
  2.
  3. Check the idle speed on the manual transmission model in Neutral and on the automatic transmission model check in Drive.
  4.

For automatic transmission, set the parking brake, block the wheels and set the shift selector in the Drive position.

  1. Adjust the idle speed to the figure shown in the Tune-Up Specifications Chart by turning the idle speed adjusting screw shown in the appropriate illustration.
  2.
  3. Stop the engine. Remove the tachometer and road test for proper operation.
  4.

19861/2-88 200SX with the CA20E Engine (Except VG30E Engine) and 1987-89 Stanza with the CA20E Engine

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

Always refer to the underhood specifications sticker for any additional applicable procedures.

  1. Before adjusting the idle speed on the engine you must visually check the following items first: air cleaner for being clogged, hoses and ducts for leaks, EGR valve for proper operation, all electrical connectors, gaskets and the throttle valve and throttle valve switch.
  2.
  3. Start the engine and warm the engine so it reaches normal operating temperature. The water temperature indicator should be in the middle of the gauge.
  4.
  5. Then race the engine to 2,000-3,000 rpm a few times under no load and then allow it to return to the idle speed.
  6.
  7. Connect a tachometer according to the instrument manufacturer's directions.
  8.
  9. Check the idle speed on the manual transmission model in Neutral and on the automatic transmission model check in Drive.
  10.

For automatic transmission, set the parking brake, block the wheels and set the shift selector in the Drive position.

  1. If the idle speed has to be adjusted you must disconnect the A.A.C. valve harness connector (Auxiliary Air Control) and the throttle valve switch harness connector.

Always refer to the underhood specifications sticker for any additional applicable procedures.

  1. Turn off the: headlights, heater blower, air conditioning, and rear window defogger. If the car has power steering, make sure the wheel is in the straight ahead position. The ignition timing must be correct to get an effective idle speed adjustment. Adjust the timing if do not know it to be correct. Connect a tachometer (a special adapter harness may be needed) according to the instrument manufacturer's directions.
  2.
  3. Start engine and warm up until water temperature indicator points to the middle of the gauge.
  4.
  5. Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no load.
  6.
  7. Disconnect idle up solenoid harness connector and then race engine 2 or 3 times under no load, then run engine at idle speed.
  8.
  9. Apply the parking brake securely and then put the transmission into Drive, if the car has an automatic. Adjust the idle speed to the figure shown in the Tune-Up Specifications Chart by turning the idle speed adjusting screw shown in the appropriate illustration.
  10.
  11. Stop engine and connect idle up solenoid harness connector.
  12.
  13. Remove tachometer and road test for proper operation.
  14.
