  1. Using the Ball Joint Remover tool HT72520000 or equivalent, remove tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  2.
  3. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  4.
  5. Remove the exhaust pipe mounting nut. Disconnect the control cable or linkage for the transmission and position it out of the way.
  6.
  7. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position and install the steering gear to the vehicle. Torque the clamp retaining bolts to EVENLY in steps to 29-36 ft. lbs. Refer to the illustrations.
  2.
  3. Install tie rod end to steering knuckle-refer to the necessary service procedures for torque specifications. Connect the control cable or linkage to the transmission and install the exhaust system.
  4.
  5. Reconnect the hoses to the power steering gear. Install the bolt securing the lower shaft to power steering gear assembly torque to 17-22 ft. lbs. (26-31 ft. lbs. on older applications).
  6.
  7. Check the fluid level. Bleed system as necessary. Start the engine check for leaks and for proper operation of the system. Check front end alignment if necessary.
  8.

When installing the lower steering joint to the steering gear, make sure that the wheels are aligned straight and the steering joint slot is aligned.

Fig. Fig. 2: Steering system - 1992 240SX

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely and remove the wheels.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the power steering hose from the power steering gear and plug all hoses to prevent leakage.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle using a suitable tools.
  6.
  7. Remove the lower joint assembly (matchmark for correct installation) from the steering gear pinion.
  8.
  9. Remove the steering gear and linkage assembly from the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Installation is the reverse order of the removal procedure. Bleed system as necessary. Torque the lower joint to steering assembly 17-22 ft. lbs. and gear housing mounting brackets EVENLY in steps to 65-80 ft. lbs. Refer to the illustrations and necessary service procedures for torque specifications. Check front end alignment if necessary.
  12.

Observe tightening torque when installing high and low pressure pipes. The O-ring in the low pressure is larger than in the high pressure side. Take care to install the proper O-ring.

Low pressure pipe torque-20-29 ft. lbs.

High pressure pipe torque-11-18 ft. lbs.

When installing the lower steering joint to the steering gear, make sure that the wheels are aligned straight and the steering joint slot is aligned.

Stanza
  1. Raise and support the car on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the hose clamp and hose at the steering gear. Disconnect the flare nut and the tube at the steering gear, then drain the fluid from the gear.
  4.
  5. Using the Ball Joint Remover tool HT72520000 or equivalent, remove the tie rod from the knuckle.
  6.
  7. Loosen, but do not remove, the steering gear mounting bolts.
  8.
  9. Remove the steering column lower joint (matchmark shaft to joint assembly-for correct installation).
  10.
  11. Unbolt and remove the steering gear.
  12.

To install:
  1. Position and install the power steering gear assembly to the vehicle. Torque the tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut to 22-29 ft. lbs., the steering gear-to-frame clamp bolts to EVENLY in steps to 43-58 ft. lbs., the lower joint-to-steering column bolt to 23-31 ft. lbs.
  2.
  3. Torque the low pressure hose clip bolt to 9-17 inch lbs. and the high pressure hose-to-gear to 29-36 ft. lbs.
  4.
  5. On most later models, observe tightening torque when installing high and low pressure pipes. The O-ring in the low pressure is larger than in the high pressure side. Take care to install the proper O-ring.

Low pressure pipe torque-20-29 ft. lbs.

High pressure pipe torque-11-18 ft. lbs.

  6.
  7. Bleed the power steering system and check the wheel alignment.
  8.

When installing the lower steering joint to the steering gear, make sure that the wheels are aligned straight and the steering joint slot is aligned with the steering gear cap or spacer mark.
