REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.
  5. Remove the steering column covers.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the combination switch and steering lock switch wiring.
  8.
  9. Remove most of the steering column support bracket and clamp nuts and bolts. Leave a few of the fasteners loosely installed to support the column while disconnecting it from the steering gear.
  10.
  11. Remove the bolt from the column lower joint.
  12.
  13. Remove the temporarily installed column support bracket bolts and withdraw the column from the (matchmark steering column-lower joint for correct installation) lower joint.
  14.
  15. Withdraw the column spline shaft from the lower joint and remove the steering column. Be careful not to tear the column tube jacket insulator during removal.
  16.

To install:
  1. Insert the column spline shaft into the lower joint and install all column fasteners finger-tight.
  2.
  3. Install the lower joint bolt. The cutout portion of the spline shaft must perfectly aligned with the bolt. Torque the bolt to 23-31 ft. lbs. (17-22 ft. lbs. on later models) Tighten the steering bracket and clamp fasteners gradually. While tightening, make sure no stress is placed on the column.
  4.
  5. Connect the combination switch and steering lock switch wiring.
  6.
  7. Install the steering column covers.
  8.
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. After the installation is complete, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop and make sure it turns smoothly. The number of turns to the left and right stops must be equal.
  14.

OVERHAUL

Non-Tilt Type Column

See Figure 3

Use the following service procedure as guide for this repair - refer to the exploded view illustrations if necessary. Modify the service steps for steering column repairs if complete overhaul is not necessary.

  1. Position the removed steering column so it can be disassembled. While disassembling and assembling, unlock steering lock with key.
  2.
  3. Remove the snap-ring, and then separate each component. Do not reuse snap-ring once it has be removed.
  4.
  5. Assemble the steering column, observing the following:
    1. Aply a coat of grease to column bearing and lower bushing.
    2.
    3. Make sure that undue stress is not applied to column shaft in axial direction.
    4.
    5. Ensure that rounded surface of the snap-ring faces toward bearing when snap-ring is installed.
    6.

  6.

Tilt Type Column

See Figure 4

Use the following service procedure as guide for this repair _ refer to the exploded view illustrations if necessary. Modify the service steps for steering column repairs if complete overhaul is not necessary.

  1. Position the removed steering column so it can be disassembled. While disassembling and assembling, unlock steering lock with key.
  2.
  3. To remove the tilt mechanism mounting bracket, remove the bolt securing the tilt joint assembly.
  4.
  5. Remove the center bolt and then separate each part of tilt mechanism assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the retaining bolts then separate the tilt mounting bracket.
  8.
  9. To disassemble the lower steering jacket tube assembly remove snap-ring then separate each part.
  10.
  11. To disassemble the upper steering jacket tube assembly remove snap-ring then separate each part. Be careful that the column spring does not spring out.
  12.
  13. To assemble the upper jacket tube assembly:
    1. Place the spring washer and spring seat to upper column shaft and then insert upper column shaft to upper jacket tube. Apply a coat of grease to the bearings.
    2.
    3. Set spring seat and washer and then install snap-ring.
    4.

  14.
  15. To assemble the lower jacket tube assembly:
    1. Fit lower bushing to lower jacket tube perfectly.
    2.
    3. Apply a coat of grease to column bearing and lower bushing.
    4.
    5. Insert lower column shaft into lower jacket tube, then install wave washer, washer and snap-ring. Ensure that the snap-ring is positioned with its round surface facing toward the bearing. Make sure that undue stress is not applied to column shaft in axial direction.
    6.

  16.
  17. Install tilt mechanism component parts, and then adjust tilt mechanism. Move the tilt lever from lock to release position several times to ensure that the upper jacket tube is tight when lever is at lock and upper jacket moves smoothly when lever is at release. If necessary, adjust tilt mechanism.
