Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

  1. Run engine to operating temperature.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine cover
     
    Battery cover
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Left and right rocker covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise to Top Dead Center (TDC) identification notch with timing indicator.
  6.  
  7. Ensure that both the intake and exhaust cam noses of the No. 1 cylinder face outside.
  8.  
  9. Measure the valve clearances at locations marked -x- shown in figure.
  10.  
  11. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise 270 degrees from the position of No. 1 cylinder compression to obtain No. 3 cylinder compression TDC.
  12.  
  13. Measure the valve clearances at locations marked -x- shown in next figure.
  14.  
  15. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise 90 degrees and measure the intake and exhaust valve clearance of No. 6 cylinder and exhaust valve clearance of No. 2 cylinder.

  1. Remove camshaft and valve lifter(s) out of specification.
  2.  
  3. Install replacement valve lifter(s).
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Manually turn the crankshaft pulley several turns.
  8.  
  9. Recheck valve clearances with engine at operating temperature.
  10.  

  1. Remove camshaft and valve lifter(s) out of specification.
  2.  
  3. Install replacement valve lifter(s).
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Manually turn the crankshaft pulley several turns.
  8.  
  9. Recheck valve clearances with engine at operating temperature.
  10.  

Inspection



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Run engine to operating temperature.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine cover
     
    Battery cover
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Left and right rocker covers
     

  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise to Top Dead Center (TDC) identification notch with timing indicator.
  8.  
  9. Ensure that both the intake and exhaust cam noses of the No. 1 cylinder face outside.
  10.  
  11. Measure the valve clearances at locations marked -x- shown in figure.
  12.  
  13. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise 270 degrees from the position of No. 1 cylinder compression to obtain No. 3 cylinder compression TDC.
  14.  
  15. Measure the valve clearances at locations marked -x- shown in next figure.
  16.  
  17. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise 90 degrees and measure the intake and exhaust valve clearance of No. 6 cylinder and exhaust valve clearance of No. 2 cylinder.
