Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Engine splash guard
     

  6.  
  7. On 4-wheel drive models only, remove front final drive and support the drive shafts.
  8.  
  9. Remove cotter pin at steering outer socket and loosen mounting nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle using special tool J-25730-A.
  12.  
  13. On 2-wheel drive models only, remove stabilizer bar mounting bolts and secure the stabilizer bar.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pipes from steering gear assembly
     
    Lower joint mounting bolt from lower shaft
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts from steering gear assembly
     
    Steering gear assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear assembly, tighten nuts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm)
     
    Lower joint mounting bolt
     
    Oil pipes to steering gear assembly
     
    Stabilizer bar, 2 wheel-drive models only
     
    Steering outer socket to steering knuckle, tighten nut to 63 ft. lbs. (86 Nm)
     
    Front final drive, 4-wheel drive models only
     
    Engine splash guard
     
    Wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
