Nissan Z - ZX 1970-1988 Repair Guide

See Figure 1

The Datsun/Nissan Z and ZX automatic transmission is manufactured by the Japan Automatic Transmission Co., Ltd. (JATCO). The following is a list of available automatic transmissions based on vehicle production year.

1970-72 model use the 3N71A automatic transmission
1973-82 models use the 3N71B automatic transmission
1983 models use the L3N71B automatic transmission
1984-88 models use the E4N71B automatic transmission

The 3N71A and 3N71B models are fully automatic units with a three element torque converter and two planetary gear sets.

The L3N71B model incorporates a hydraulic lock-up torque convertor which allows the transmission to shift gears in response to signals of both engine speed and manifold vacuum.

The E4N71B model provides a shifting pattern of "Standard'' or "Power'' which is automatically selected by the microcomputer, depending upon the vehicle speed and the throttle position. The electronically controlled lock-up system permits lock-up of all forward speeds (1st through 4th).

The lock-up mechanism is not provided with the VG30ET turbo models.

While it is unlikely that you will ever disassemble an automatic transmission yourself, there are a few maintenance or service procedures in addition to adjustments which can be performed to prolong the transmission's life. The most important element though, is to change the fluid regularly, which is covered in General Information & Maintenance .
