REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  

If equipped with the VG30E engine, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the starter from under the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect and label the wires from the solenoid terminals.
  2.

  1. Remove the starter-to-flywheel housing bolts, then pull the starter forward and out.
  2.  
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  4.  

BRUSH REPLACEMENT



1970-77 Models

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Remove the starter from the vehicle. On 1973-76 automatic transmission equipped models and all 1977 models, remove the dust cover, the E-ring and the two thrust washers from the rear cover. Remove the two brush holder set screws from the rear cover.

  3. On all models, remove the two through bolts and the rear cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brushes from their holders by lifting the brush spring away from the brush; you can use a hook fabricated from wire to do this.
  6.

  1. Unsolder the brush electrical connections.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brushes.
  4.  
  5. To install, insert the brushes into the holder, solder the brush electrical connections, raise the brushes far enough to permit installing the brush holder over the commutator and reverse the removal procedures.

1978-88 Models

See Figures 6 and 7

  1. Remove the starter from the vehicle. Remove the solenoid from the starter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the through bolts and the rear cover. The cover can be pried off with a screwdriver but be careful not to damage the O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the starter housing, the armature and the brush holder from the center housing; they can be removed as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the positive side brush from its holder. The positive brush is insulated from the brush holder and its lead wire is connected to the field coil.

  1. Carefully lift the negative brush from the commutator and remove it from the holder.
  2.  
  3. Unsolder the brush electrical connections, then remove the brushes.
  4.  
  5. Install the new brushes and solder their wires to the connections. Install the brush holder, the armature and the starter housing to the center housing. Install the rear cover, the O-ring and the solenoid.
  6.  

DRIVE REPLACEMENT



1970-77 Models

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Loosen the locknut and remove the connection going to the "M'' terminal of the solenoid. Remove the securing screws and the solenoid.
  2.  
  3. On 1973-76 automatic transmission models and all 1977 models, remove the dust cover, the E-ring, the thrust washers and the two screws retaining the brush holder assembly. Remove the brush cover through bolts and the cover assembly (all models).
  4.  
  5. Lift the brushes to free them from the commutator and remove the brush holder.
  6.  
  7. Tap the yoke assembly lightly with a wooden hammer and remove it from the field and the case.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut and bolt which serve as a pin for the shift lever, carefully retaining the associated washers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the armature assembly and the shift lever.
  12.  
  13. Push the stop ring (located at the end of the armature shaft) toward the clutch, then remove the snapring and the stop ring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clutch assembly from the armature shaft.
  16.  
  17. To install the drive, perform the following:
    1. Install the clutch assembly onto the armature shaft.
    2.  
    3. Put the stop ring on and hold it toward the clutch while installing the snapring.
    4.  
    5. Install the armature assembly and the shift lever into the yoke.
    6.  
    7. Install the washers, the nut and bolt which serve as a shift lever pivot pin.
    8.  
    9. Install the field back onto the yoke assembly.
    10.  
    11. Lift the brushes and install the brush holder. Install the brush cover and through bolts.
    12.

On the 1973-76 automatic transmission models and all 1977 models, replace the brush holder set screws, the thrust washers, the E-ring and the dust cover.

  1. Install the solenoid. Reconnect the wire to the "M'' terminal of the solenoid.
  2.  

1978-88 Models

See Figures 6 and 7

  1. Remove the starter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the solenoid and the shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts securing the center housing to the front cover and separate the parts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gears and the starter drive.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedures.
  10.  

SOLENOID REPLACEMENT

  1. Loosen the locknut and remove the connection going to the "M'' terminal of the solenoid.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retaining screws and the solenoid.
  4.  
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedures.
