REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1970-74 Models
  1. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze, and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Remove the carburetor followed by the intake manifold from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate procedures in this section.
  2.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield plate.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold flange.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold retainer nuts, then slide the manifold off the studs and out of the engine.
  8.
  9. Clean all gasket material from both mating surfaces.
  10.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Use new gaskets between the manifold and engine. Check to make sure all connections are tight, and the coolant level is correct before starting the vehicle.

1975-83 Models

  1. Remove the intake manifold from the engine compartment. Refer to the procedure in this section for more details.
  2.
  3. Unplug the oxygen sensor harness.
  4.
  5. If equipped with a turbo, disconnect the oil line attached to the turbo.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold assembly. If equipped with a turbo, the exhaust pipe should be disconnected at the turbo.
  8.
  9. If turbo equipped, remove the retainer nuts securing the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Slide the turbo off the studs and out of the engine compartment. Clean all gasket material from the base of the turbo.
  10.
  11. Remove the retainer bolts and nuts securing the exhaust manifold to the engine. Slide the manifold off and out of the engine compartment.
  12.
  13. Clean all gasket material from both mating surfaces.
  14.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Use new gaskets between the components. Tighten the manifold-to-engine bolts to 25-33 ft. lbs. (32-43 Nm) for 10mm bolts, or 11-18 ft. lbs. (14-23 Nm) for 8mm bolts and the manifold-to-engine nuts to 9-12 ft. lbs. (12-20 Nm).
  16.

When torquing the manifold bolts, work from the center outwards, in two progressive steps, to the proper torque. 1984-88 Models

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold covers.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the exhaust manifold crossover tube from the exhaust manifolds at the rear of the engine.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the left exhaust manifold.

  1. If equipped with a turbocharger, perform the following:
    1. Disconnect the oil passage tube from the turbocharger.
    2.
    3. Remove the turbocharger-to-throttle body air intake tube.
    4.
    5. Remove the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold.
    6.

  2.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-engine bolts and the manifolds from the engine.
  4.
  5. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  6.
  7. To install, use new gaskets and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the exhaust manifold-to-engine bolts to 13-16 ft. lbs. (17-21 Nm), the crossover tube-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 16-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm), and the turbocharger-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 33-40 ft. lbs. (43-52 Nm).
