REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except VG Engines

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. If the engine is in the vehicle, attach a lift, support the engine and remove the engine mounting bolts as described in the Engine removal and installation procedures.
  2.
  3. Raise the engine slightly, watching to make sure that the hoses or wires are not damaged.
  4.
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.

CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  1. Remove the oil pan bolts and slide the pan out to the rear.

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.
  3. To install, use a new oil pan gasket (coat both sides with silicone sealant). Tighten the pan bolts to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm), in an alternating pattern from the center to the ends. Overtightening will distort the pan lip, causing leakage. Refill the oil pan with new oil.
  4.

Before installing the oil pan, apply a thin bead of silicone sealant to the engine block at the junctions of the block-to-front cover and the block-to-main bearing cap.
