Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except VG Engines
  1. Label and remove the high tension wires from the spark plugs.
  2.  

If equipped with a turbocharger, disconnect and remove the air intake duct which covers the rocker arm cover.

  1. Remove the PCV valve from the rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder head bolts and the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  6.  
  7. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 7-12 ft. lbs. (9-16 Nm).

VG Engines

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

The V-type engine is equipped with two rocker arm covers.

RIGHT SIDE
  1. Label and disconnect any wires, hoses or tubes which will interfere with the rocker arm cover removal.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with an EFI system, remove the following:
    1. The air intake duct from the intake plenum.
    2.  
    3. The EGR tube from the exhaust manifold and the EGR valve from the air intake plenum, if additional access room is needed.
    4.  
    5. The air regulator valve from the intake manifold, if additional access room is needed.
    6.

  5. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder head bolts and the rocker arm cover.

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  

To install:
  1. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 1-2 ft. lbs. (1-3 Nm), the EGR valve bolts to 13-17 ft. lbs. (17-22 Nm) and the EGR tube to 25-33 ft. lbs. (32-43 Nm).

LEFT SIDE
  1. Label and disconnect any wires, hoses or tubes which will interfere with the rocker arm cover removal.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with a turbocharger, remove the following:
    1. The turbocharger-to-throttle body tube.
    2.  
    3. The accelerator linkage from the throttle body.
    4.  
    5. The air intake manifold collector from the intake manifold.
    6.

  5. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder head bolts and the rocker arm cover.
  6.  
  7. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  8.  

To install:
  1. To install, use new gaskets and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 1-2 ft. lbs. (1-3 Nm) and the intake manifold collector bolts to 13-16 ft. lbs. (17-21 Nm).
