REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1970-83 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Drain the radiator coolant through the lower draincock.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze, and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the water outlet.
  2.
  3. Loosen the mounting bolts, then remove the water outlet, the gasket and the thermostat.
  4.

  1. To install, use a new gasket, sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Refill the cooling system.
  2.

Install the thermostat with the wax pellet downward and use a new water outlet gasket coated with sealer. On 1979 and later models use a thermostat with an air bleed hole in the flange. The thermostat should be installed with the hole facing the left-side of the engine. If it is necessary to replace the thermostat, be sure the new one has a bleed hole.

1984-88 Models

See Figures 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Drain the coolant from the draincocks on the cylinder block and radiator.
  2.
