Turbocharger

The turbocharger is installed on the exhaust manifold. This system utilizes the exhaust gas energy to rotate the turbine wheel, which drives the compressor turbine installed on the other end of the turbine shaft. The compressor supplies compressed air to the engine, thereby increasing efficiency, and resulting in improved engine output and torque.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except VG Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the heat insulator, the inlet tube, the air duct hose and the suction air pipe.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the exhaust gas sensor harness connector, the front tube, the oil delivery tube and the oil drain pipe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the turbocharger-to-exhaust manifold nuts and the turbocharger.

The turbocharger should not be disassembled; it must be replaced as a whole unit if found to be defective.

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the turbocharger-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 33-40 ft. lbs. (43-52 Nm).

VG Engines

See Figure 2

  1. Remove the following:
    1. Compressor and compressor bracket.
    2.  
    3. Exhaust front tube.
    4.  
    5. Center cable.
    6.  
    7. Heat insulator for the brake master cylinder.
    8.  
    9. Air duct and hoses.
    10.  
    11. Exhaust manifold connecting tube and heat shield plate.
    12.  
    13. Oil delivery tube and return hose.
    14.

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger as an assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold.
  4.  

The turbocharger should not be disassembled; it must be replaced as a whole unit if found to be defective.

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. To install, use new gaskets and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the turbocharger-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 33-40 ft. lbs. (43-52 Nm) and the exhaust manifold-to-engine bolts to 13-16 ft. lbs. (17-21 Nm).
