REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Refer to the Valve removal and installation procedures in this section, and remove the valve and the springs.

INSPECTION



See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Place the spring(s) on a surface plate and check the squareness, using a steel square.
  2.  

If the outer spring is out of square more than 0.087 in. (2.2mm), replace it. If the inner spring is out of square more than 0.047 in. (1.2mm) for all engines except VG, or 0.075 in. (1.9mm) for VG engines, replace it.

  1. Measure the free length of the spring; the outer spring should be 51mm (2 in.), the inner spring should be 45mm (1.7 in.).
  2.  
  3. Using a spring pressure tester, measure the spring tension; the outer spring should be 29mm @ 108 lbs. (all engines except VG), or 30mm @ 117.7 lbs. (VG), the inner spring should be 24mm @ 56.2 lbs.
