REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-83 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Drain the cooling system through the lower radiator draincock.
  2.  


CAUTION
When draining coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze, and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts and the shroud.
  2.

  1. Loosen and remove the fan belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan and pulley from the water pump hub.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water pump-to-front cover bolts and water pump.
  6.  
  7. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  8.  
  9. To install, use a new gasket, sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Refill the cooling system.
  10.  

1984-88 Models

See Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7

  1. Drain the coolant from the right-side draincocks on the cylinder block and radiator.
  2.

  1. Remove the radiator shroud fan and pulleys.

  1. Remove the power steering, the compressor and the alternator drive belts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the water pump hose.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower timing covers.
  6.  

Be careful not to get coolant on the timing belt.

  1. Remove the water pump retaining bolts and the water pump.
  2.  
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm). Refill the cooling system.
