REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1976-78 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the side bumper plug, then remove the two bolts retaining the rear side bumper to the car body.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two nuts retaining the bumper to the shock absorber and remove the bumper assembly.
  4.

  1. To remove the shock absorbers the fuel tank and muffler will have to be removed. The shock absorbers are removed by removing the retaining bolts and nuts.

  3. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1979-81 Models

See Figure 2

  1. Remove the bolts attaching the rear side bumper to the rear fender.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear carpet and padding and remove the bolts attaching the shock absorber to the body and then remove the rear bumper with the shock absorber.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the bumper to shock bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm) and the shock absorber to body bolts to 23-31 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).

1982-83 Models

See Figure 3

  1. Remove the bumper from the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Remove the side bumper.
  4.

  1. Remove the carpet and padding and remove the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the bumper to shock bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm) and the shock absorber to body bolts to 23-31 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).

1984-88 Models

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Open the rear hatch and remove the retaining nuts securing the rear bumper cover to the fenders. The retainer nuts can be found in the recesses behind each wheel as well as below the rear light assemblies.

  3. Working from below the bumper, remove the retaining screws securing the bumper cover to the bumper reinforcement.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bumper cover from the vehicle to expose the bumper reinforcement.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retaining nuts securing the bumper reinforcement to the bumper shocks.
  8.  
  9. Lift the reinforcement away from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedures, Before tighten the hardware, inspect the bumper cover to make sure the assembly is straight.
