FLUID RECOMMENDATION AND LEVEL CHECK
The manual rack and pinion steering gear should be inspected for leaks or seepage every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). The factory recommends inspection of the lubricant level at the same time. However, there is no filler plug on the gear housing. Consequently, level checks require removal of the backlash adjusting screw and locknut, and resetting of the backlash adjustment afterwards. In general, if no leakage is evident, the fluid level can be assumed to be satisfactory.
