Nissan Z - ZX 1970-1988 Repair Guide

Power Steering Pump

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

The ZX power steering gear reservoir is equipped with a level dipstick, attached to the filler cap. The dipstick has a scale on each side, one for cold and the other for hot fluid.

  1. The level is checked with the engine off and wheels pointed straight ahead.
  3. Remove the fluid reservoir cap and check the level on the dipstick. Use the HOT or COLD scale as appropriate.
  5. If the level is incorrect, add DEXRON® automatic transmission fluid until the proper level is reached.

Be careful not to overfill the reservoir; overfilling will cause foaming and fluid loss.

Check the various lines, hoses and connections for leakage. Hose, line and connection leaks can be corrected by replacement of the part; the system must be bled afterwards ( see Suspension & Steering ). Leaks in the power steering gear should be corrected by a Nissan dealer or other qualified professional.

The fluid recommendation and level check procedure given here is for the factory installed unit on ZX models only. If your 1970-78 Z-car has an aftermarket power steering unit, consult the manufacturer for fluid checks and recommendations.
