REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-78 Models

CAUTION
Never smoke when working around gasoline! Avoid all sources of sparks or ignition. Gasoline vapors are EXTREMELY volatile!

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drain plug and drain all the fuel from the tank.
  4.  
  5. Label, then disconnect the gauge unit electrical wiring. Disconnect the outlet or outlets and return hose(s) at the tank.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts from the tank securing bands and lower the tank slightly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and label the three ventilation hoses used on models with evaporative emission control. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe. Remove the tank.
  10.  
  11. The tank should be checked carefully for dents or cracks which might cause leaks. Replace the tank as necessary.
  12.  
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Be sure to connect the filler hose after the tank has been mounted, to prevent leakage at the connection. Be careful not to kink hoses or overtighten the fittings when reconnecting.

1979-83 Models

  1. Reduce the fuel line pressure to zero. Follow the appropriate steps under the fuel pump removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. The tank has no drain plug. Fuel must be drained as follows:
    1. Disconnect the fuel outlet hose from the fuel pipe.
    2.  
    3. Place the hose into a metal container and seal the opening with a rag.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the alternator "L'' terminal or the oil pressure switch electrical lead.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable.
    8.  
    9. Turn the ignition switch to ON .
    10.  
    11. Allow the fuel pump to empty the tank into the container.

WARNING
Stop the fuel pump before the tank is completely empty to prevent damage to the pump. Disconnect the negative battery cable after emptying the tank.

  1. Remove the fuel filler pipe protector inside the right rear wheel opening. Disconnect the filler hose and the evaporative emission control hose. Plug the hose openings.
  2.  
  3. Remove the luggage compartment mat. Remove the cover over the tank sending unit and hose connections. Disconnect the gauge electrical harness, as well as the ventilation, fuel feed and fuel return hoses.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel tank retaining straps/nuts and the tank.
  6.  
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Be careful not to twist or kink any of the hoses.

1984-88 Models

See Figures 1 and 2

Before disconnecting any fuel lines, the fuel pressure must be released.

  1. Release the fuel pressure as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the harness connectors of the fuel tank gauge unit and the electric fuel pump in the luggage compartment.
  2.  
  3. Siphon off or pump out fuel from the filler opening of the fuel tank into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel filler neck ring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right rear side wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel filler tube protectors and disconnect the ventilation hose.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the fuel hoses and the evaporative hose on the fuel tube side.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the bolt and nut on the fuel tank retaining straps, then remove the fuel tank with the filler tube.
  14.  

DO NOT separate the tank from the filler tube unless replacement is necessary.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the filler ring.
