Fuel Injectors

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except VG Engines

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Detach the electrical connector(s) from the fuel injector(s), then disengage the harness from the fuel pipe wiring clamp.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PCV hose from the rocker arm cover.
  6.

  1. Disconnect the pressure regulator-to-intake manifold vacuum hose from the pressure regulator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air regulator pipe.
  4.  

When removing the fuel hoses from the fuel pipe, place a rag under the connections to catch the excess fuel.

  1. Disconnect the fuel feed and the fuel return hoses from the fuel pipe.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel pipe bolts and the fuel injector-to-engine retaining screws, then pull out the fuel pipe, injectors and pressure regulator as an assembly.
  4.  

When removing the fuel injector(s) from the fuel pipe, place a rag under the connections to catch the excess fuel.

  1. Loosen the fuel injector(s)-to-fuel pipe hose clamp(s) and pull the fuel injector(s) from the fuel pipe.
  2.  
  3. To install the fuel pipe assembly, use new upper/lower injector insulator washers and reverse the removal procedures.
  4.  

When installing the injectors, make sure that there are no scratches or abrasions at the lower rubber insulator, and securely install them so that they are airtight.

  1. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

VG Engines

See Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. At the intake collector, disconnect the air duct, the accelerator wire, the PCV hoses, the air regulator hose, the EGR tube, the electrical harness clamps/connectors and the intake collector cover.

  1. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the pressure regulator and the fuel pipe assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake collector bolts and the collector. Remove the fuel pipe retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel injector retaining bolts followed by the injectors, fuel pipe and pressure regulator as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. To install, use new O-rings on the injectors and reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
  8.  

FUEL INJECTOR HOSE REPLACEMENT



See Figure 15

  1. Refer to the Fuel Injector removal and installation procedures, in this section, and remove the fuel injector(s) from the fuel pipe.
  2.  
  3. To remove the rubber hose from the fuel injector, perform the following:
    1. On the rubber hose of the injector, measure a point approximately 0.8 in. (20mm) from the socket end.
    2.  
    3. Using a 150 watt soldering iron, cut into the braided reinforcement from the mark to the socket end; DO NOT allow the soldering iron to touch the injector tail piece or the plastic electrical connector.
    4.  
    5. Pull the rubber hose from the injector.
    6.

  1. To install a new rubber hose onto the fuel injector, perform the following:
    1. Clean the exterior tail piece of the fuel injector and wet the interior of the new hose with fuel.
    2.  
    3. Push the new rubber hose (with hose socket) onto the injector's tail piece (by hand) as far as it will go; it is not necessary to clamp the hose to the injector.
    4.  
    5. Install the injector(s) onto the fuel pipe and secure with a clamp.
    6.

TESTING



  1. With the engine operating, place a screwdriver (firmly) onto the injector(s) while the handle is positioned to your ear. Listen to the handle. The injector noise/vibration should be even.
  2.  
  3. If the operation of an injector is questionable, remove each injector's electrical connector, one at a time until the faulty injector is found.
  4.  
  5. When the faulty injector is located, replace it.
  6.
