Door Glass and Regulator

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-78 Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Refer to the Door Panel removal and installation procedures in this section, and remove the door panel.
  2.  
  3. Using the cranking handle, lower the window glass all the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer door molding. Remove the door sash-to-door inner panel and draw the door sash up.
  6.  
  7. Support the door glass (in the down position) and remove the glass back plate-to-guide channel.
  8.

  1. Loosen the front and rear guide rail bolts, then raise the door glass and draw it upwards.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retaining bolts and the guide rails from the door.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retaining screws, then the guide channel, the regulator arm base and the regulator base; remove them through the large opening at the base of the door.
  6.  
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Adjust the window glass.
  8.  

1979-88 Models

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Refer to the Door Panel removal and installation procedures in this section, and remove the door panel.
  2.  
  3. Using the cranking handle (manual) or switch (power), lower the window glass all the way.
  4.  
  5. Using a small screwdriver, turn the outside molding retaining clips 90° and remove the molding.
  6.

The retaining clips are made of plastic; DO NOT apply excessive force to them.

  1. Raise the window glass until the retaining screws appear at the access holes in the door inside panels. Remove the front and the rear stopper bolts.
  2.  
  3. Holding the glass in one hand, remove the regulator-to-glass retaining bolts, then raise the glass and draw it upwards.
  4.  

When removing the window hardware from the door, use the large access hole.

  1. Remove the front guide rail assembly retaining screws and the assembly.
  2.  

If equipped with power windows, disconnect the electrical harness connector.

  1. Remove the regulator assembly retaining screws and the assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear guide rail assembly retaining screws and the assembly.
  4.  
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedures.
  6.  

Be sure to grease the regulator and the guide channel sliding surfaces.

ADJUSTMENT



1970-78 Models

See Figure 6

  1. Refer to the Door Panel removal and installation procedures in this section, and remove the door panel.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the front and the rear guide rails and guide channels.
  4.  

For the lower adjusting bolt, tighten it all the way, then return it 4 turns and secure the lock nut at that position.

  1. With the glass in the up position, adjust the guide rail upper adjusting bolts so that the clearance between the outside panel and the glass face is 0.8-0.9 in. (22-24mm). Raise and lower the glass to assure the correct fit.

Make sure that the outside door weatherstrip is making the proper contact with the door glass, when the window is raised and lowered.

  1. With the glass in up position, move the guide channel A up or down so that the glass is parallel with the top rail of the door sash. The sideways play of the glass can be adjusted by moving the front and rear guide rails fore and aft.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the adjusting bolts. The operating force of the control handle should be less than 7.7 lbs. (3.5 kg) at the knob.
  4.  

Be sure to lubricate the guide rollers, the guide rails and the regulator linkage.

1979-88 Models

See Figures 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12

Before adjusting the window glass, be sure to check the weatherstrip to be sure that it is installed correctly.

  1. Refer to the Door Panel removal and installation procedures in this section, and remove the door panel.

  1. For the In/Out Adjustment at the waist area, perform the following:
    1. Place the window in the up position (door must be closed), then loosen the front and rear guide rails upper securing bolt.
    2.  
    3. Turn the upper adjusting bolts so that the window will push on the door's upper molding seal by 0.04 in. (1mm), then tighten the upper adjusting bolts.
    4.

  3. For the In/Out Adjustment at the roof molding, perform the following:
    1. Place the window in the up position (door must be closed).
    2.  
    3. Using the lower adjusting bolts, adjust the upper edge of the glass to obtain 0.17-0.33 in. (4-8mm) between the inner surface of the glass and the weatherstrip inner edge.

  5. For the Tilt Adjustment at the roof molding, perform the following:
    1. Loosen the front/rear upper stopper securing bolts and the front/rear guide rail adjusting nuts.
    2.  
    3. Adjust the door regulator so that the upper side of the glass is parallel with the body side weatherstrip.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. For the fore and aft adjustment, perform the following:
    1. Loosen the front and rear guide rail adjusting bolts.
    2.  
    3. Adjust the door glass so that it is equally positioned on the weatherstrip.
    4.

  9. For the Upper Stop Adjustment, perform the following:
    1. Loosen the rear stopper bolt and position the rear of the window glass 0.4-0.5 in. (10-13mm) between the top of the glass and the base of the weatherstrip.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the front stopper bolt and position the front of the window glass 0.4-0.5 in. (10-13mm) between the top of the glass and the base of the weatherstrip.

  11. After adjustment is complete, make sure that each alignment is within specifications.
