  2.
  3. Remove the caliper mounting bolts and the caliper.
  4.
  5. To install, place the caliper into position and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-52 Nm) for 1970-81 and 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-31 Nm) for 1982 and later.
  6.
  7. Reconnect the parking brake cable.
  8.
  9. Reconnect the brake line at the caliper and tighten the brake line fitting to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm). Bleed the brake system.

OVERHAUL

1979-81 Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Remove the caliper from the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the pads.
  4.
  5. Stand the caliper assembly on end, large end down and push on the caliper to separate it from the yoke.
  6.
  7. Remove the retaining rings and dust seals from both pistons. Discard the dust seals.
  8.
  9. Push in on the outer piston to force out the piston assembly. Remove and discard the piston seals.
  10.
  11. Remove the yoke spring from the yoke.
  12.

  1. Disengage the piston assembly by turning the outer piston counterclockwise.
  2.
  3. Disassemble the outer piston by removing the snapring.
  4.
  5. Disassemble the inner piston by removing the snapring. This will allow the spring cover, the spring and the spring seat to come out. Remove the inner snapring, the key plate, the pushrod and the strut.
  6.
  7. To assemble the pistons, reverse the order of disassembly. Apply a thin coat of grease to the groove in the pushrod, its O-ring, the strut ends, the oil seal, the piston seal and the inside of the dust seal.
  8.

The piston seals, the dust seals, the oil seal and the pushrod O-ring should be replaced with new ones whenever the caliper is disassembled. New parts are included in the rebuilding kit.

  1. Install the piston seals. Apply a thin coat of grease to the groove in the sliding surfaces of the piston and caliper bore. Install the pistons into the caliper. Install the retainers onto the dust seals.
  2.
  3. Install the yoke springs on the yoke.
  4.
  5. Lightly coat the yoke, the caliper body contact surfaces and the pad pin hole, with silicone grease. Assemble the yoke to the caliper.
  6.
  7. Install the pads and the caliper.
