Nissan Z - ZX 1970-1988 Repair Guide

Fuel Filter

Print

The fuel filter should be replaced every 2 years or 25,000 miles (40,000 km) and ONLY when the engine is cold. Always place some absorbent cloths under the filter before disconnecting any lines, because some gas will spill from the bottom of the filter during removal.

On fuel injected models, be sure to properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.

REPLACEMENT

1970-73 Models

See Figure 1

The fuel filter is a clear plastic unit mounted in a clamp in the engine compartment.

  1. Remove the filter from its clamp.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the fuel lines from both ends of the filter.
  4.
  5. Discard the old filter.
  6.

  1. Install the fuel lines onto the replacement filter and tighten the clamps.
  2.
  3. Position the filter in the clamp.
  4.
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.

1974 Models

See Figure 2

This filter is similar to the one used on earlier models, but it is located near the rear axle along with the electric fuel pump. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Use the method given for earlier models to replace the filter.

  1. Remove the filter from its clamp.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the fuel lines from both ends of the filter.
  4.
  5. Discard the old filter.
  6.
  7. Install the fuel lines onto the replacement filter and tighten the clamps.
  8.
  9. Position the filter in the clamp.
  10.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.

1975-79 Models

See Figures 3 and 4

The fuel filter is retained by a bracket to the inner fender directly behind the evaporative canister. Before the filter can be replaced, the high pressure in the fuel system must be released.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the cold start valve electrical connector. The cold start valve is located in the intake runner.
  4.
  5. Use two jumper wires from the battery to connect to the terminals on the cold start valve.
  6.

CAUTION
Be careful not to short these jumpers against each other.

Hold the jumpers to the valve terminal for about 2-3 seconds. This will relieve the pressure in the fuel system.

  1. Remove the fuel lines from the fuel filter after loosening the clamps.
  2.
  3. Remove the filter retaining bracket bolt and the filter.
  4.
  5. To install, use a new filter and clamps, then reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.

1980-88 Models

See Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

The fuel filter is of the same type as that used on the other fuel injected models, but the method for discharging the fuel injection system is different.

  1. Start the engine.
  2.
  3. On 1980-81 models, remove the fuel pump relay (No. 1 in the diagram) from the relay connector while the engine is running. The relay is located on the right front fender in the engine compartment, just behind the windshield washer reservoir. On 1982-85 models, lift the rear floor mat and disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector while the engine is running. On 1986-88 models, remove the fuse for the fuel pump while the engine is running.

  1. After the engine stalls, crank the engine 2-3 more times.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF . Install the fuel pump relay (1980-81), reattach the connector (1982-85) or install the fuse (1986-88).
  4.
  5. Release the clamps securing the fuel hoses to the filter. Be careful not to spill fuel on the engine. Disconnect the hoses from the filter.
  6.
  7. Remove the filter-to-bracket bolt and the filter.
  8.
  9. Install the new filter. Connect the fuel hoses and secure them with new clamps.
  10.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
