ADJUSTMENTS



  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Using a large wrench, loosen the large locknut at the bottom of the steering gear.
  4.  
  5. Using a large screwdriver, while holding the locknut with the wrench, turn the adjusting screw all the way in and back it off 20°-25°, then secure the locknut to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check the steering wheel for play; if necessary, readjust it.
  8.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Block the rear wheels. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the steering column lower joint shaft-to-rubber coupling bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering shaft-to-steering pinion gear, the separate the shaft from the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tie rod end-to-knuckle arm cotter pins and castle nuts.
  8.  
  9. Using the Steering Ball Joint Puller tool No. HT2520000, separate the tie rods from the knuckle arms.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering gear housing-to-suspension crossmember bolts.
  12.  
  13. Place a floor jack under the engine's oil pan, with a block of wood between the jack and the pan.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the engine mounting bolts and raise the engine approximately 0.5 in. (13mm), then remove the steering gear and linkage from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the steering gear-to-suspension crossmember bolts to 33-44 ft. lbs. (45-60 Nm).
