J35A6 Engine
Installing A New Belt

Specific to:

Honda Odyssey 2007-2008

  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2.  
  3. Clean the timing belt pulleys, timing belt guide plate, and the upper and lower covers.
  4.  
  5. Set the timing belt drive pulley to top dead center (TDC) by aligning the TDC mark (A) on the tooth of the timing belt drive pulley with the pointer (B) on the oil pump.

  7. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks (A) on the camshaft pulleys with the pointers (B) on the back covers.

  9. Remove the battery clamp bolt from the back cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the auto-tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Align the holes on the rod and housing of the auto-tensioner.
  14.  
  15. Use a hydraulic press to slowly compress the auto-tensioner. Insert a 2.0 mm (0.08 in.) pin through the housing and the rod.
    NOTE
    The compression pressure should not exceed 9,800 N (2,200 lbs.).

  17. Align the holes on the rod and housing of the auto-tensioner.

  19. Use a hydraulic press to slowly compress the auto-tensioner. Insert a 2.0 mm (0.08 in.) pin through the housing and the rod.
    NOTE
    The compression pressure should not exceed 9,800 N (2,200 lbs.).

  21. Install the auto-tensioner.
    NOTE
    Make sure the pin stays in place.

  23. Screw the battery clamp bolt in as shown to hold the timing belt adjuster. Tighten it by hand; do not use a wrench.

  25. Loosely install the idler pulley with a new idler pulley bolt so the pulley can move but does not come off.
  26.  
  27. Install the timing belt in a counterclockwise sequence starting with the drive pulley.

  29. Tighten the idler pulley bolt.

  31. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.

  33. Remove the battery clamp bolt from the back cover.

  37. Install the timing belt guide plate as shown.

  41. Install the front upper cover (A) and rear upper cover (B).

  43. Install the crankshaft pulley.

  45. Rotate the crankshaft pulley six turns clockwise so the timing belt positions itself on the pulleys.

  47. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its white mark (A) lines up with the pointer (B).

  49. Check the camshaft pulley marks.
    NOTE
    If the marks are not aligned, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, and recheck the camshaft pulley mark.

    1. If the camshaft pulley marks are at TDC, go to step 24.
    2.  
    3. If the camshaft pulley marks are not at TDC, remove the timing belt and repeat step 3 through 22.

  51. Install the upper half of the side engine mount bracket, and tighten the new mounting bolts (A), then the mass damper mounting bolt (B).

  53. Install the drive belt.
  54.  
  55. Install the splash shield.

  57. Install the right front wheel.

  59. Do the crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure.
    NOTE
    The ECT needs to be at 176 °F (80 °C) or higher.

    1. Clear the CKP pattern while the engine is stopped.
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    4.  
    5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 30 seconds.
    6.  
    7. Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from an engine speed of 2,500 rpm to 1,000 rpm with the A/T in 2 position.
    8.  
    9. Stop the vehicle, but keep the engine running.
    10.  
    11. Check PULSER F/B LEARN in the DATA LIST with the HDS. If it is NOT COMPLETED, go to step 4. If it is COMPLETED, go to step 7.
    12.  
    13. Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from an engine speed of 5,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm with the A/T in 2 position.
    14.  
    15. Stop the vehicle, but keep the engine running.
    16.  
    17. Check the PULSER F/B LEARN (HIGH RPM) in the DATA LIST with the HDS. If it is NOT COMPLETED, go to step 7. If it is COMPLETED, go to step 10.
    18.  
    19. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    20.  
    21. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 30 seconds. The CKP learning procedure is complete.

Installing A Used Belt

Specific to:

Honda Odyssey 2007-2008

  1. Remove the right front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft so that the white mark on the pulley (A) lines up with the pointer (B).

  9. Check that the TDC timing mark (A) on the front camshaft sprocket is aligned with the pointer (B) on the cover.

  11. Support the engine with a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.

  15. Using the tools shown and a 19mm socket, remove the damper bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the damper.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front and rear upper belt covers.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower cover.

  23. Remove one of the battery hold-down clamp bolts and grind the end as shown.

  25. Screw the battery clamp bolt in as shown to hold the timing belt adjuster in its current position. Tighten it by hand. Do not use a wrench.

  27. Remove the timing belt guide plate.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower side engine mount bracket.
  30.  
  31. Remove the idler pulley bolt and idler pulley. Discard the bolt.

  33. Remove the timing belt.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts.
  2.  
  3. Set the crankshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the TDC mark (A) with the pointer (B) on the oil pump.

  5. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks (A) on the camshaft pulleys with the pointers (B) on the covers. See the illustrations in INSTALLING A NEW BELT.

  7. Loosely install the idler pulley with a new bolt so that the pulley can move but won-t come off.
  8.  
  9. If the auto-tensioner has extended, and the timing belt can-t be installed, see the procedure for INSTALLING A NEW BELT.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing belt in a counter-clockwise sequence, starting with the crankshaft drive pulley.

  13. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  14.  
  15. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torques:

    Lower half engine mount bracket: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Lower cover: 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Upper covers: 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft damper: Tighten the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Mark the bolt head and pulley, then tighten the bolt an additional 60°.
