  1. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.
  2.
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheel nuts and front wheels.
  6.
  7. Lift up the locking tab on the spindle nut, then remove the nut.
  8.
  9. Drain the automatic transmission fluid Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
  10.
  11. Separate the front stabilizer link from the damper. See the procedure under Front Suspension.
  12.
  13. Remove the lock pin from the lower arm ball joint castle nut, and remove the nut, then separate the ball joint from the lower arm with the ball joint thread protector and remover.
    NOTE
To avoid damaging the ball joint, install the ball joint thread protector onto the threads of the ball joint. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.

  14.
  15. Pull the knuckle outward, and remove the outboard joint from the front wheel hub using a plastic hammer.
  16.
  17. Remove exhaust pipe A.

  19. Left halfshaft: Pry the inboard joint (A) from the transmission housing with a prybar. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    NOTE
Do not pull on the halfshaft (B) or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the halfshaft straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.

  21. Right halfshaft: Drive the inboard joint (A) off of the intermediate shaft with a drift and hammer. Remove the halfshaft as an assembly.
    NOTE
Do not pull on the halfshaft (B) or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the halfshaft straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.

To install:

  1. Install a new set ring in the set ring groove of the halfshaft (left halfshaft).

  2.
  3. Apply 2.0-3.0 g (0.07-0.11 oz) of grease to the whole splined surface (A) of the right halfshaft. After applying grease, remove the grease from the splined grooves at intervals of 2-3 splines and from the set ring groove (B) so that air can bleed from the intermediate shaft.

  4.
  5. Clean the areas where the halfshaft contacts the differential thoroughly with brake cleaner, and dry with compressed air. Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent. Insert the inboard end (A) of the halfshaft into the differential (B) or intermediate shaft (C) until the new set ring (D) locks in the groove (E).

Torque the new castle nut (C) to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the nut by loosening it.
    NOTE
Make sure the ball joint boot is not damaged or cracked.

  12.
  13. Install the new lock pin (D) into the ball joint pin hole.
