Inspection

  1. Inspect camshaft bearing journals for damage and binding. If journals are binding, check the cylinder head for damage. Also check cylinder head oil holes for clogging.
  2.
  3. Check the cam lobe and bearing surfaces for abnormal wear and damage. Replace camshaft if defective.
    NOTE
If camshaft is replaced due to lobe wear or damage, always replace the rocker arms.

  4.
  5. Measure the lobe actual wear (unworn area - wear zone = actual wear) and replace camshaft if out of limit. Standard value is 0.001 inches (0.0254mm), wear limit is 0.010 inches (0.254mm).

Removal & Installation

NOTE
After all components are installed on the engine, a DRB® scam tool is necessary to perform the camshaft and crankshaft timing relearn procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Cylinder head cover

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and target magnet

    Timing belt

    Camshaft sprocket

    Rear timing belt cover

Loosen the camshaft bearing caps in sequence from the rear of the cylinder head

  1. Install the camshafts and cam followers, lubricate the bearing journals thoroughly.
  2.
  3. Install the left and right camshaft bearing caps, No-s 2-5 and right side No. 6. Torque these fasteners to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Apply Mopar® gasket maker to No.1 and left side No. 6. Torque these fasteners to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) on 2002 models or 250 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on 2003-06 models.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
An oil and filter change are recommended.

    Camshaft seals

    Rear timing belt cover

Camshaft sprockets and torque the bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)

    Timing belt

    Target magnet

CMP sensor and torque the screws to 85 inch lbs. (9.6 Nm)

    Cylinder head cover

    Negative battery cable

  6.
  7. Use a DRB® scam tool to perform the camshaft and crankshaft timing relearn procedure, as follows:
    1. Connect the scan tool to the DLC (located under the instrument panel, near the steering column).
    2.
    3. Turn the ignition switch ON and access the -miscellaneous- screen.
    4.
    5. Select the -re-learn cam/crank- option, then follow the instructions on the scan tool screen.
    6.

  8.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks. Run the engine with the radiator cap off so as the engine warms and the thermostat opens, coolant can be added to the radiator. Test drive vehicle to check for proper operation.
