  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The battery cables
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The battery and tray
     
    The upper starter-to-transaxle bell housing bolt
     
    The transaxle dipstick and tube
     
    The gearshift cable end from the transaxle shift lever
     
    The gearshift cable bracket bolt from the transaxle
     
    The transaxle oil cooler lines. Plug the lines to prevent contamination.
     
    The input and output speed sensor electrical connectors
     
    The transaxle range sensor connector
     
    The solenoid/pressure switch assembly connector
     
    Both front wheels
     
    The left front splash shield
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The power steering hose from the structural collar
     
    The left and right side engine-to-transaxle lateral brace and structural collar
     
    The starter motor electrical connectors
     
    The starter
     
    The gearshift cable bracket
     
    The driveplate-to-torque converter bolts and support the powertrain assembly
     
    The transaxle upper mount to bracket bolts and lower the powertrain assembly
     
    The transaxle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The transaxle and torque the bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (105 Nm) while supporting the transaxle with a jack
     
    The mount-to-transaxle bracket. Torque the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) and remove the jack
     
    The driveplate-to-torque converter bolts and torque the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    The starter and hand tighten the bolts
     
    The dipstick tube and secure the bracket to the transaxle. Torque the upper starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    The cable bracket to the bell housing and torque the bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
     
    The starter lower bolt and torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    The starter electrical connections
     
    The bell housing dust cover
     
    The lower dust shield screws and torque the bell housing cover bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    The right side lateral bending brace and torque the bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm)
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The left side splash shield and both wheels
     
    The cooler lines to the transaxle and secure with constant tension clamps
     
    The solenoid/pressure switch assembly
     
    The transaxle range sensor connector
     
    The input/output sensor connectors
     
    The gearshift cable to the bracket and connect it to the manual valve lever
     
    The battery tray and battery
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The VSS wiring
     
    The battery cables
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Be sure the vehicle-s back-up lights and speedometer are working properly.
  6.
