Operation

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a Hall Effect sensor mounted to the transaxle. The sensor is triggered by the ring gear teeth passing below it. The VSS pulse signal to the speedometer/odometer is monitored by the PCM speed control circuitry to determine the vehicle speed and to maintain speed control set speed.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector.
    WARNING
Clean the area around the VSS before removing in order to prevent dirt from entering the transaxle during the VSS removal.

  6.
  7. Remove the VSS retaining bolt.
  8.
  9. Remove the VSS from transaxle.
    WARNING
Carefully remove the VSS so that the sensor drive gear does not fall into the transaxle. Should the sensor drive gear fall into the transaxle during sensor removal, the drive gear must be reattached to the sensor.

  10.
  11. Remove VSS drive gear from speed sensor.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the pinion gear to the VSS.
  2.
  3. Using a NEW O-ring, install the VSS to the transaxle.
  4.
  5. Install the retaining bolt and torque to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect VSS electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle and road test it in order to verify the proper speedometer operation.
  10.

Testing

  1. Ensure the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is correctly tightened to the transaxle housing.
  2.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    NOTE
Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the PCM. Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records, then clear the DTC(s).

    WARNING
Support the lower control arms in the normal horizontal position in order to avoid damage to the drive axles. Do not operate the vehicle in gear with the wheels hanging down at full travel.

  6.
  7. Raise and support the drive wheels.
  8.
  9. Start and idle the engine.
  10.
  11. Engage the transaxle in forward drive gear.
  12.
  13. Select Vehicle Speed Sensor on the scan tool.
  14.
  15. With the drive wheels rotating, the Vehicle Speed Sensor reading should increase when the wheel speed increases.
