Removal & Installation
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Insert a seal remover between the dust lip and the metal case of the crankshaft seal. Angle the tool through the dust lip against the metal case of the seal. Pry out the seal.
WARNINGDO NOT let the pry tool contact the crankshaft seal surface. Contact of the tool blade against the crankshaft edge (chamfer) is permitted.
If the crankshaft edge (chamfer) has any burrs or scratches on the edge, clean it up with 400 grit sand paper to prevent seal damage during installation of the new seal.
No lubrication is necessary when installing the seal.
- Place Crankcase Seal Pilot Tool 6926-1 on the crankshaft; this is a pilot tool with a magnetic base
Position the seal over the pilot Tool; be sure the words THIS SIDE OUT on the seal can be read.
NOTEThe pilot tool should stay on the crankshaft during installation of the seal. Be sure the seal lip faces the crankcase during installation.
WARNINGIf the seal is driven in the block past flush, this may cause an oil leak.
- Drive the seal into the block, using Crankshaft Seal Tool 6926-2 and handle C-4171, until the tool bottoms out against the block.
Install or connect the following:
The flexplate/flywheel. Apply Lock & Seal Adhesive to the bolt treads and torque the bolts in a star pattern, to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
- Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
